Istanbul Modern is a museum of modern and contemporary art on the Karaköy waterfront, in the Galataport district. Opened in 2004 as Turkey’s first museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art, it presents works by Turkish and international artists in changing exhibitions and a permanent collection. Inside, you can find painting, sculpture, photography and video, alongside a cinema, library, café and shop. The Renzo Piano-designed building and rooftop terrace bring the Bosphorus into view, giving this visit a different perspective from Istanbul’s historic sights.

Istanbul Modern opened in 2004 as Turkey’s first museum devoted to modern and contemporary art. Its purpose is to collect, preserve and present art, with a focus on sharing Turkey’s artistic creativity with local and international audiences. The museum also shows work from elsewhere in the world.

The current building, designed by Renzo Piano’s Building Workshop, opened in 2023 on the museum’s original waterfront site. Its glass and industrial forms sit beside the Bosphorus in the Karaköy area. The architecture is part of the visit: views of the water enter the museum experience, and the rooftop terrace looks across the waterfront.

Collections and changing exhibitions

The permanent collection follows modern and contemporary art in Turkey, with works across painting, sculpture, photography and other media. Its displays change, so the works and themes on view can differ between visits. Artists represented in the collection include Hoca Ali Rıza, Nurullah Berk, Nedim Günsür, Ömer Uluç and Canan Tolon, as well as international artists such as Olafur Eliasson and Adrián Villar Rojas.

Temporary exhibitions bring Turkish and international artists into the programme. Photography has its own gallery, and the museum also presents work in video and other forms. One permanent exhibition, “Modern Experiences,” traces the development of painting from the 19th century to the 1940s. The museum’s galleries provide a useful counterpoint to Istanbul’s many historic buildings and collections.

The museum’s programme extends beyond its exhibition spaces. A cinema hosts film screenings, while educational and social programmes include activities for children. The building also contains a library, café, restaurant and shop. These spaces make it possible to combine an exhibition visit with a film or a break on site.

For the rooftop, a clear, sunny day is the practical choice: the terrace has reflecting pools and views over the Bosphorus. If you are carrying heavy bags, leave them at the basement coat check. Galataport has an airport-style X-ray screening at its entrance, so allow time for that before reaching the museum. Admission is paid, and the museum recommends arranging tickets in advance.
