En bref

Choose Lugano for a bigger lake city with two funicular mountains, the LAC arts center and an hour-long link to Milan. Choose Locarno for a smaller town with the Piazza Grande, Madonna del Sasso, the Cardada lift and the Centovalli and Verzasca valleys behind it. With a Ticino Ticket you can base in one and visit the other by train.

Lugano or Locarno: the short answer

Lugano suits travelers who want a bigger lake city with two funicular mountains, museums and the LAC arts center, while Locarno suits those who want a smaller town with a famous square, a hilltop pilgrimage church and valleys behind it. Both sit in Ticino, the Italian-speaking south, and both have a mild lake climate, so the question is less about weather than about what you want to do with your days. The Lugano travel guide and the Locarno travel guide cover each place in depth, and this page settles the choice. For the wider trip, start with the Switzerland guide.

The deciding factors are the lifts, the day trips and the calendar. Lugano's strength is concentration: a compact center, a lakefront park, two mountains reached by funicular and boats to Gandria and Morcote. Locarno's strength is range: a funicular and cable car to 1,670 m, boats to the Brissago Islands and rail and road to the Centovalli and the Verzasca Valley. The calendar matters too, because the Locarno Film Festival fills the town in August and shapes the price and availability of rooms.

If you only have two or three days in Ticino, choose one base and use trains for the other. If you have five or more, split the stay. The sections below explain how.

Read the rows as a map of activities. Lugano packs its outings close to the center: the Monte Brè funicular starts at Cassarate and the San Salvatore funicular at Paradiso, both inside the city. Locarno spreads its outings outward: Madonna del Sasso and Cardada start near the lake, but the Brissago Islands are a boat ride of 40 to 60 minutes, the Centovalli is a train journey toward Italy and the Verzasca Valley is a road excursion.

Lugano in detail

Lugano Region describes Lugano as a small city nestled between the lake and sharp mountains, a meeting place of Swiss and Mediterranean cultures with a mild climate all year. The lakefront promenade leads to Parco Ciani, a mixed Italian and English garden near the Cassarate river mouth. Two funiculars add the mountain: the Monte Brè lift returns CHF 26 for adults, and the Monte San Salvatore lift returns CHF 32, according to their own fare lists.

The city also holds the LAC arts center, which its site lists as home to MASI Lugano, the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana and the Finzi Pasca theater company. For more on how to spend two days, read Lugano in 2 days. For where to sleep, where to stay in Lugano compares the lakefront, Paradiso, Cassarate and the station area.

Lugano's trade-offs are scale and season. It is a city rather than a village, and its lifts follow seasons: San Salvatore closes from 9 November 2026 to 12 March 2027 for renovation, and Monte Brè closes from 11 January to 12 February 2027.

Locarno in detail

The Ascona-Locarno tourist board calls Locarno the city of film on Lake Maggiore and the starting point for excursions into the valleys. Its old town, the Città Vecchia, has boutiques, cafés, churches and the Visconti Castle, with narrow alleys that lead to the Piazza Grande. The board says the Locarno Camellia exhibition takes place each March, when the Camellia Park is in bloom, and lists Moon+Stars concerts and an ice rink on the Piazza as other seasonal events.

The Madonna del Sasso pilgrimage church stands on a rocky spur above the town. A funicular climbs to Orselina, and a cable car continues to Cardada and the Cimetta chairlift at 1,670 m. The board says you can see both the highest and the lowest point of Switzerland from there: Lake Maggiore at 193 m is the lowest. For day trips, the Brissago Islands offer a botanical park open from 18 March to 8 November in 2026, with boats from Locarno taking between 40 and 60 minutes and from Ascona 15 minutes. The Centovalli railway and the Verzasca Valley, with its 220 m dam, round out the choice.

Locarno's trade-offs are size and weather dependence. It is smaller, and its best outings, the Cardada lift and the Brissago Islands, depend on a clear sky and boat service. The tourist board publishes a rainy-day list for the region. For the full picture, see the Locarno travel guide and, across the border, the Lake Maggiore guide.

Which fits your trip: by traveler type

First-time visitors who want a city feel should choose Lugano: more to do in the center, two funiculars and an easy link to Milan. Visitors drawn to film, a historic square and a quieter pace should choose Locarno. Hikers who want valley and river trails should look at Locarno, where the Centovalli and Verzasca valleys and the Cardada lift are close, while those who prefer hill walks from the city can use the Monte Brè trail from Lugano. Couples after a lake dinner and a promenade walk will find both work: Lugano has its lakefront promenade, and Locarno has the Piazza Grande.

Travelers with limited mobility should check each lift's access rules, since stations differ. The Monte Brè funicular's site, for example, says the upper section is wheelchair accessible but the Cassarate to Suvigliana section is not, and that minibus transport is available with notice. Families can use either base. Lugano's lakefront park and funiculars suit short outings, and Locarno's lido, boats and the Cardada lift suit longer ones. Check children's fares at each operator, since prices vary.

Rainy-day planning is easier in Lugano, where the LAC, MASI and MUSEC all sit within the city and a wet afternoon can be spent indoors. Travelers without a car can use either base, because both have a station close to the center and the Ticino Ticket gives free public transport at partner properties.

Seasons, festivals and closures

The Locarno Film Festival is the calendar's big event. Ticino tourism lists the 2027 edition as 4 to 14 August, with daily evening screenings on the Piazza Grande and projections in other cinemas. Confirm the dates for your year on the festival's own site, and book rooms as soon as they are announced. If you want quiet, avoid the festival days; if you want the atmosphere, plan early.

For Lugano, the summer schedule runs longer. The lake boat's touristic timetable runs from 29 March to 18 October 2026, and the San Salvatore funicular offers evening openings in July and August. In winter, Lugano is a city and museum season, because the San Salvatore lift is closed and the boat timetable shortens. Locarno in winter is quieter, with the Brissago Islands closed after 8 November in 2026.

May to October gives you every lift and boat in both towns. April and November are the in-between months, with some services paused. Check each operator's page for your dates.

Combining both with the Ticino Ticket

The Ticino Ticket makes a two-base trip cheaper. Ticino tourism says guests at more than 500 partner accommodations travel free on public transport across the canton from check-in for the length of their stay and benefit from discounts at partner attractions. It advises contacting the property before booking, since the ticket depends on the hotel.

The discounts are concrete in Lugano: the Monte Brè return drops from CHF 26 to CHF 18.20 and the San Salvatore return from CHF 32 to CHF 25.50 for ticket holders. A sensible split for five nights is two in Lugano and three in Locarno, or the reverse, with a day trip by train between them. For a short trip, sleep in one town and visit the other for a day, using the Ticino Ticket to pay nothing for the train.

Getting there and between the two

Lugano Region says Lugano is under two hours by train from Zurich and about an hour from Milan, and that the small Lugano-Agno airport is about 20 minutes from the center by taxi. The Ascona-Locarno board says Locarno station is a few minutes' walk from Piazza Grande, and that drivers from the Gotthard side should plan around traffic and leave at Bellinzona Sud for Locarno. For the Swiss rail side, see the Swiss Travel Pass guide and getting around Europe.

Between the two towns, check the SBB timetable for your date. If you arrive by the Bernina Express and its bus link, the St Moritz guide explains the Tirano connection to Lugano.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is booking Locarno in August without checking the Film Festival dates. The second is planning a Lugano mountain day in November without noting the San Salvatore closure. The third is assuming the Ticino Ticket comes with every hotel. The fourth is expecting Locarno's outings to be as close together as Lugano's. The last is packing both lake towns into a two-day trip, which leaves most of the time on trains.

Before you go, set up an eSIM for Europe so timetables work near the Italian border, and buy travel insurance that covers cancelled lifts and trail injuries. Check your passport's entry rule with the visa checker.

FAQ

Is Lugano or Locarno better?

Lugano for a bigger lake city with two funicular mountains, museums and the LAC arts center. Locarno for a smaller town with the Piazza Grande, a hilltop pilgrimage church and valley excursions. Neither wins outright; the choice follows your interests.

Can you visit both Lugano and Locarno in one trip?

Yes. Both are in Ticino, linked by rail, and the Ticino Ticket gives free public transport at partner properties. Two nights in each is a comfortable split, and a day trip from one to the other also works.

Which is better for families, Lugano or Locarno?

Both work. Lugano has two funiculars and a lakefront park, and Locarno has a lido, boats to the Brissago Islands and the Cardada lift. Check each lift's family fares, since children's prices differ by operator.

When is the Locarno Film Festival?

Traditionally in August. Ticino tourism lists the 2027 edition as 4 to 14 August, with daily evening screenings on the Piazza Grande. Confirm the dates on the festival's own site, and book rooms as soon as they are announced.

How far apart are Lugano and Locarno?

They are both in Ticino and connected by train, so a day trip between them is straightforward. Check the SBB timetable for your connection rather than relying on a fixed travel time.
