Parco Ciani

Parco Ciani is a lakeside park in the centre of Lugano, on the shore of Lake Lugano.

Parco Ciani is a lakeside park in the centre of Lugano, on the shore of Lake Lugano. It covers over 60,000 square metres of lawns, flower beds, statues and fountains, with tree-lined paths and benches facing the water. Entry is free. Locals come here for picnics, slow walks and gelato by the lake. In spring the flower beds are at their fullest, and at sunset the light reflects off the lake.

From private villa to public park

The park grew up around a private villa owned by a noble family. The city of Lugano bought the estate in 1912 and turned it into a public park.

Since then it has been the place in the centre of town where people come to sit, walk and rest. At the time of the purchase, a local professor argued that the park's natural beauty was worth protecting.

Villa Ciani stands in the park, a peach-coloured villa that is now used as an exhibition space. It often appears in publicity photos for Lugano Tourism.

Other buildings in the park include the Natural History Museum, the Cantonal Library, the Convention Centre and a church. Sculptures and fountains are spread across the lawns, so you can see art as you walk.

Trees, flowers and the lakeshore

Many of the trees are more than a century old. Maple, lime, oak and plane trees, typical of the Ticino region, give plenty of shade on warm days.

Palms and cacti grow here as well, and the park has more than a thousand varieties of roses. Tulips and bright flower beds fill the park in spring.

The wrought-iron gate on the lakeshore, in front of Villa Ciani, is the most photographed spot in the park. From there you can frame Lake Lugano with Monte San Salvatore behind it.

Swimming, sunset and facilities

A small area near the water is used for swimming, and swimming is allowed in designated areas only.

At sunset the sun reflects off the lake, and the stony beach at the far end of the park is a good place to watch it.

The park has a playground, a basketball court, a volleyball court, a tennis court and a skateboarding area. Picnic tables and a barbecue grill are available, and dogs are welcome. The entrance is wheelchair accessible.
