Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

The Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus crowns Mount Tibidabo, above Barcelona.

The Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus crowns Mount Tibidabo, above Barcelona. Its neo-Gothic upper church rises over a Romanesque crypt, with stained glass, mosaics and a bronze statue of Christ on the central tower. Go inside to see the religious details, then take in the city and Mediterranean from the summit. An elevator gives access to a higher viewpoint; the temple is also reached by bus or funicular, making it a rewarding stop alongside Tibidabo’s amusement park.

The Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, also known as Sagrat Cor, stands at the summit of Mount Tibidabo. Construction began in 1902 and continued until 1961. Enric Sagnier i Villavecchia designed the church, and his son Josep Maria Sagnier i Vidal completed it. The building was consecrated in 1952.

The temple has two distinct parts: a Romanesque crypt below and a main church in a neo-Gothic style. Its design also draws on Catalan Gothic, French Gothic, Modernist and Neo-Byzantine influences. Stones from the mountain were used in construction, alongside later stone from Girona, whose colour differs slightly.

Inside, look for stained-glass windows and inscribed details depicting the life of Christ, alongside religious symbolism. The building’s decorative work continues across the exterior, where the central tower is crowned by a bronze figure of the Sacred Heart.

Stairs inside the church lead to additional sanctuaries upstairs. An elevator provides access to a higher viewpoint, where the summit setting opens out over Barcelona and the Mediterranean. On exceptionally clear days, the Balearic Islands may also be visible.

Getting to the summit

The temple is on Tibidabo, above the city. Bus and funicular are among the ways to reach the summit; the funicular ride climbs the mountain. The Tibidabo amusement park is adjacent, so the two can be combined in one outing.

If you plan to explore the upper parts of the church, allow time for the stairs. The hill can feel cold in cooler months, so bring an extra layer. A walk down through the forest is another option after your visit.
