Entry is free, and guided tours can be booked in advance. English information may be limited, so have a translation app ready if you do not understand Catalan or Spanish.
A prison through Barcelona’s history
La Model operated as a prison from 1904 until 2017. Its history spans the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, the Spanish Civil War and the Franco era. Walking through the surviving prison spaces gives visitors a sense of the institution’s place in the city’s past.
The site has since been adapted for cultural and community purposes. Its continued use gives the former prison a role in present-day Barcelona as well as a historical one.
