The Monasterio de San Jerónimo is a Renaissance monastery and church in central Granada, founded by the Catholic Monarchs. Its two cloisters offer a quiet pause, with orange and lemon trees in their gardens and arches decorated with royal emblems. Inside the church, look for the monumental altarpiece, paintings, sculptures and the tomb of military commander Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, known as the Great Captain. The monastery is also associated with Granada’s patron saint, John of God, whose relics are kept here.

The Catholic Monarchs, Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon, founded the monastery during the period of Granada’s Christian conquest. It was first established in nearby Santa Fe before being moved to Granada. Construction in the city began in 1504, and the complex became the first monastery founded there after the Reconquest.

The monastery is associated with the Immaculate Conception of Mary. Its church was the first in the world consecrated to this dedication. The complex includes both the church and monastery buildings, and its design is chiefly associated with Diego de Siloé, alongside other architects and artists.

Two cloisters and their courtyards

The monastery has two cloisters, each arranged around a garden. Orange trees grow in the courtyards, and the peaceful setting offers a different pace from the surrounding city. The first courtyard has 36 semicircular arches decorated with the emblems and initials of the founding monarchs and other prominent figures. Arches in the second courtyard follow a Gothic style.

The cloisters give a sense of the monastery’s enclosed life as well as a chance to look closely at the building’s architectural details. More than 500 plaques in the complex commemorate monks who lived there.

The church, altarpiece and tomb

The church is the main draw for its extensive decoration. Its large altarpiece rises across the space, with paintings and sculptures arranged from floor to ceiling. The interior also contains murals, chapels and other works of art, including Moorish-influenced details. Look up to see the decorated ceiling and its glasswork.

The monastery is the burial place of Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, the military commander known as the Great Captain. Relics of several saints are also kept here, including those of Saint John of God, Granada’s patron saint. An audio guide can add context to the church and its religious history. From behind the upper part of the altarpiece, visitors can look back across the nave and see further decoration, including frescoes and silver statues.
