A guided tour takes you through 10 traditional houses and a collection of more than 2,000 pieces, including chests, bookcases, chairs and tables. Reserve ahead, especially if you need an English tour.

The Korea Furniture Museum is in Seoul’s Seongbuk District, at 121 Daesagwan-ro. Its collection includes more than 2,000 traditional pieces, arranged across 10 hanoks. The setting gives the furniture a domestic context: instead of seeing objects in a single gallery, you move through traditional houses and see how furnishings fit into the spaces where people lived.

The collection centers on wooden furniture, including chests, bookcases, chairs and dining tables. Some pieces were made from persimmon, maple or paulownia wood; decorative finishes include lacquer and mother-of-pearl. Earthenware and brassware are also part of the household collection. The houses themselves are worth attention, with traditional architecture and joinery that used no nails.

What the guided tour covers

You can visit the museum only on a guided tour, which lasts about an hour. Guides explain the collection and the architecture of the homes, including how furniture was used in Joseon-era life. The tour is the way to see the houses and collection, so book in advance rather than arriving without a reservation. English tours are not available every day.

The lady’s quarters offer a more personal glimpse of life inside the houses. The room has a large window looking out onto the grounds, and guests may be invited to sit on the floor and experience the view from there. The tour also explains the layers of clothing and headwear associated with a Joseon queen. Give yourself time to look closely at the craftsmanship, although the tour follows a set pace.

Planning your visit

Make a reservation through the museum’s website several days ahead, particularly if you want an English-language tour. Wear shoes that slip off easily: you’ll need to remove them during part of the visit. Photography inside is restricted, so check with your guide before taking pictures around the compound.

The museum can be difficult to reach and move around, including within the site. A taxi is a practical option for the journey there and back. If you take a bus, Naver Map can help you plan the route. The guided visit takes about an hour; allow extra time for getting to and from the museum.
