At 530 Cheonggyecheon-ro in Seongdong-gu, the Cheong-gye-cheon Museum traces the stream’s history and its changing place in Seoul, from the Joseon dynasty to the present. Its exhibits connect the waterway to the city’s growth and to the restoration completed in 2005. The free museum makes a useful first stop before walking beside the stream.

The museum follows Cheonggyecheon from its place in the city during the Joseon dynasty to its modern role. Its history is told alongside changes in Seoul and Korea, giving context to how the waterway and the city developed together.

The exhibits cover the stream’s significance across more than 600 years. They also explain why it was covered in the mid-20th century and how the decision to restore it reshaped the area. The restoration was completed in 2005, and the museum also addresses issues that remain.

Following the exhibition route

The visit begins on the upper floor, reached by escalator. From there, the route descends through three floors along a broad, sloping corridor. The spiral layout carries the exhibition through different periods of Korean history toward the present.

English and Korean text accompanies the displays. Multimedia presentations, projections and art animations add visual detail, while interactive elements invite you to engage with parts of the exhibition. A large map is another feature to look out for as you make your way down.

Continue beside the stream

The museum is at the western end of Cheonggyecheon Stream. Its exhibits provide background on the restoration and the waterway’s place in Seoul before you continue outside to see the stream itself.

Across the road, small display buildings beside the stream offer another stop. From there, you can begin a walk along the waterway and see the urban setting the museum has been explaining.
