Bongeunsa Temple

Bongeunsa is an active Buddhist temple in Seoul’s Gangnam district, across from COEX Mall.

Bongeunsa is an active Buddhist temple in Seoul’s Gangnam district, across from COEX Mall. Founded in 794, it brings traditional halls, prayer spaces and wooded paths into a setting of modern towers. Walk through the grounds to see the tall statue of Maitreya Buddha, smaller figures, colourful lanterns and the bell and drum pavilions. The temple remains a place for prayer and meditation, so keep your voice low and give worshippers space. It is a calm cultural stop to pair with COEX.

Bongeunsa was established in 794, during the Silla period, by the monk Yeonhoe. It was first known as Gyeonseongsa. The temple later took the name Bongeunsa, and its buildings have been rebuilt over the centuries. The present grounds sit in Gangnam, where office towers and busy streets frame the temple’s traditional roofs.

The entrance gate, Jinyeomun, is guarded by four kings. From there, paths lead through a complex of halls and prayer spaces. The site is still used for Buddhist worship, with people coming to pray, chant and meditate. Treat it as a religious place as well as a landmark: move quietly and leave room for those using the grounds for practice.

Daewungjeon is the main shrine. Its lattice doors and painted decoration carry Buddhist imagery and symbols. As you walk between the buildings, look for detailed wooden work, smaller statues and the bell and drum pavilions. Lanterns add colour along the paths, while trees and a wooded hillside soften the view of the city around the grounds.

The large standing statue of Maitreya, the future Buddha, is one of the temple’s most recognisable sights. Smaller figures gather around it. Walk up to this part of the complex, then take the paths behind the pagodas for a quieter stretch. From some points, temple roofs and the surrounding city appear together, making the contrast between older architecture and modern Gangnam easy to see.

A visit and ways to take part

You can explore the temple grounds on foot and pause at the halls, statues and garden paths. Entry is free. Shops on the grounds sell souvenirs, and the temple also runs cultural programs, including meditation and temple stays. Some practices, such as chanting, meditation and tea ceremonies, allow visitors to engage more closely with Buddhist traditions; check the temple’s own information for current program details.

Bongeunsa is directly across from COEX, so it is straightforward to combine a quiet walk around the temple with time at the mall. For a less busy visit, choose early morning or late afternoon. If you arrive while prayers or meditation are taking place, watch from a respectful distance rather than interrupting.
