Green Point Park is a public park in Green Point, Cape Town, on the former Green Point Common beside the Cape Town Stadium.

Green Point Park is a public park in Green Point, Cape Town, on the former Green Point Common beside the Cape Town Stadium. Its Biodiversity Showcase Garden holds indigenous Cape plants, including around 300 species, with a labyrinth, ponds and birdlife along the paths. Two playgrounds, shaded lawns and picnic areas make it a good family stop. The park also lies on a walkable route between Green Point and the Mouille Point promenade, so it works as a shortcut to the seafront.

From Green Point Common to the park

The land was once Green Point Common, an open stretch that has been part of Cape Town life for generations. In the 18th century the Dutch called it De Waterplaats, or the Foreshore, a name that ran from Three Anchor Bay toward the town.

The common was redeveloped ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and the park opened in 2011 as part of the stadium development. The site keeps its open lawns and adds gardens, play areas and paths.

The Biodiversity Showcase Garden

The garden holds around 25,000 indigenous plants, trees, shrubs, bulbs and groundcovers, from some 300 plant species. The planting is native to the Cape, and the garden is laid out around streams that flow off Table Mountain.

Signs along the walking trails explain the plantings in the biodiversity areas. A labyrinth for quiet walking and an interesting sundial sit among the gardens, and a nursery is also part of the park.

Ponds and water features draw birds, fish, frogs and tadpoles. The wetlands hold a range of waterfowl, and the lawns give views of Lions Head and Signal Hill.

Play areas, paths and sport

Play is split by age. The Tot Lot is a fenced playground for ages 1 to 6, and the adventure playpark suits ages 7 to 16, with swings, a jungle gym, slides and tunnels. A stream lets children splash about, and the open lawns suit running and games.

Adults can use an outdoor gym, and the park has an open field and an amphitheatre. A secure cycling path runs along the water, and walkers and runners use the paths too. Bikes can be hired for a ride around the park.

A walkable shortcut links the Fan Walk pathway in Green Point with the Mouille Point seaside promenade.

Eco features and practical details

The park was designed with sustainable features, including solar power, rainwater harvesting and recycled materials.

The park is at 1 Fritz Sonnenberg Road in Green Point. Entry is free, and parking is free just outside.
