Threave Castle

Threave Castle is a late 14th-century stronghold on an island in the River Dee near Castle Douglas.

Threave Castle is a late 14th-century stronghold on an island in the River Dee near Castle Douglas. Its tower rises above the water, with countryside and nature-reserve paths to explore on the riverbank. When boat access is running, you can cross to the island and see the ruins; access and work on the castle can change, so check ahead before setting out. If you stay on shore, the estate’s walks, bird hides and benches make a worthwhile outing in their own right.

Threave Castle was built in the late 14th century for the Black Douglases, one of the rival Douglas dynasties. Archibald, known as the Grim, Lord of Galloway, is associated with its construction. Set on an island in the River Dee, the castle served as a stronghold for the family.

The castle later passed to the Lords Maxwell. In the 1640s, a siege by Covenanters against the Royalist garrison left it in ruins. Princess Margaret, daughter of King Robert III, is also associated with the castle: she lived there for a period.

The river setting is central to a visit. From the nature reserve, paths offer views across the water to the castle, while bird hides and benches provide places to pause along the way. The wider Threave Estate has circular routes through farmland and woodland, with views of the surrounding countryside.

Crossing to the island depends on boat access, which has not always been available. The castle has also been subject to safety work, and access to its interior may be restricted. Check current arrangements with Historic Environment Scotland before you travel; if the boat is not running, you can still see the ruins from the riverbank.
