Inveraray Jail occupies a former prison and courthouse in the town centre. The prison opened in 1820 and held men, women and children. Its history reaches beyond the prison itself: the court continued to sit in the building until 1954.

Designed by James Gillespie Graham, the jail was built from rough-hewn red stone. Its thick walls and narrow, unglazed windows give the cells a stark appearance. Originally, cells occupied both floors. The prison closed in 1889, but the courthouse remained in use for decades afterwards.

Inside the living museum

The museum takes you through the courtroom and prison areas, with displays covering the jail’s history and the experiences of people held there. You can look inside open cells and follow the trail through the building. Costumed characters portray prisoners and the warder, while courtroom scenes recreate trials that took place here.

The exhibits cover punishment and prison conditions, including practices that could be harsh. A free audio guide adds context as you move through the jail; guides are available in six languages. Visitors can also speak with the costumed characters and see how the courtroom and cells fit together as a working complex.

Adding the escape room

The escape room turns the jail visit into a group puzzle challenge. Players work together to follow clues and collect coins as they try to secure their release. The experience lasts about an hour, and a game master guides the session. It is available to visitors aged over eight.

You can visit the museum without taking part in the escape room, or book both for a longer outing. The escape room is suited to families and groups who enjoy solving puzzles together; book ahead if you want a particular time.
