The spring at St Bernard’s Well was discovered in 1760, before the temple was built. Its water gained a reputation for healing properties, drawing people to the site. The well’s name refers to a 12th-century monk.

In 1788, Lord Gardenstone commissioned a classical-style building to house the pump room. Edinburgh painter Alexander Nasmyth designed it. The structure is more than two centuries old and stands beside the Water of Leith.
