Saint Michael’s Castle, also called Mikhailovsky or the Engineer’s Castle, is a former imperial residence at Sadovaya Street 2 in central St Petersburg.

Saint Michael’s Castle, also called Mikhailovsky or the Engineer’s Castle, is a former imperial residence at Sadovaya Street 2 in central St Petersburg. Built for Emperor Paul I between 1797 and 1801, it now houses a branch of the Russian Museum, including a Portrait Gallery of emperors, empresses and other figures. Each façade draws on a different style, including French Classicism, Italian Renaissance and Gothic. The castle’s octagonal courtyard and position among the Moika, Fontanka and two canals give it a distinctive setting.

Saint Michael's Castle

Saint Michael’s Castle was built between 1797 and 1801 as a residence for Emperor Paul I. It is also known as Mikhailovsky Castle and the Engineer’s Castle. Paul was assassinated in his bedroom 40 days after moving into the palace.

The castle became a branch of the Russian Museum in the early 1990s. Its galleries include portraits of Russian emperors and empresses, alongside portraits of dignitaries and other notable figures dating from the late 17th to the early 20th century.

The castle changes in appearance from one side to another. Its façades use elements of French Classicism, Italian Renaissance and Gothic architecture. The building is arranged around an octagonal courtyard, where a sculpture of Paul I stands.

The castle was constructed on an artificial island. The Moika and Fontanka rivers and two specially dug canals surrounded it. From the bridges and nearby banks, you can see how water shaped the original setting. A boat trip along either river provides another view of the exterior.

The castle grounds

Look closely at the courtyard sculptures, including the figure of Paul I. A monument to Peter I on horseback stands in front of the castle. The former protective ditch has been filled in, but its outline can still be seen near a bridge.

Mikhailovsky Garden is nearby. Its grounds have served the imperial family as a place for formal gatherings, hunting, plant cultivation and horseback riding. The garden is now a public park with trees and a large pond.
