Ivan the Great Bell-Tower

The 81-metre Ivan the Great Bell-Tower rises above Cathedral Square inside the Moscow Kremlin.

The 81-metre Ivan the Great Bell-Tower rises above Cathedral Square inside the Moscow Kremlin. Built to provide a belfry for the surrounding Assumption, Archangel and Annunciation cathedrals, it became one of Moscow’s defining landmarks. You can visit an exhibition on the Kremlin’s architectural history and climb to an observation deck for views over the square and the city. Look for the Tsar Bell and Tsar Cannon nearby. Entry to the tower requires a separate ticket from the other Cathedral Square sites.

A belfry for Cathedral Square

Ivan the Great Bell-Tower
Ivan the Great Bell-Tower

The Ivan the Great Bell-Tower stands on Cathedral Square in the Moscow Kremlin. It was built for the Assumption, Archangel and Annunciation cathedrals, which did not have their own bell towers. Construction began in the early 16th century, and the tower reached its present height of 81 metres in 1600.

For centuries, it was the tallest structure in Moscow. Its position above the surrounding churches made it a prominent part of the Kremlin skyline and a landmark in the city. The tower and its attached church have passed through periods of change and damage, including an explosion ordered by Napoleon’s forces as they left Moscow.

Inside the tower

The tower is part of the Kremlin Museums. An exhibition inside traces the history of the Kremlin’s architecture, including its development over time. The visit also gives you a closer look at the tower’s interior and its role in the group of religious buildings around Cathedral Square.

A separate ticket is required for entry to the tower. It is not covered by the ticket for the other Cathedral Square cathedrals, so check the ticket arrangements before you go if you want to visit both.

Views and the bell ensemble

An observation deck gives views across Cathedral Square and toward Moscow’s older streets. The tower’s height makes it a clear viewpoint over the Kremlin ensemble. Nearby, the Tsar Bell and Tsar Cannon are two large monuments that you can see from outside the tower.

The bell ensemble includes historic bells cast in the 16th and 17th centuries. The bells are still there, though they are no longer rung regularly. Their original purpose was practical as well as ceremonial: bells marked religious occasions and royal events, and could also sound an alarm.
