On Kutuzovsky Avenue in Moscow, the Battle of Borodino Museum-panorama tells the story of the 1812 battle through wartime objects and a vast circular painting. Franz Roubaud’s 360-degree scene places you at a pivotal moment in the fighting, with narration and sound effects adding context. Explore the collection of uniforms and weapons on one level, then take in the panorama on another. Interactive displays, including a chance for children to try on a soldier’s uniform, add a hands-on element. An English guided tour can help explain the battle in more depth.

The panorama and the battle

The museum’s central work is a circular painting by Franz Roubaud, depicting a moment in the Battle of Borodino. It is a 360-degree scene viewed from within, not an outdoor vista. Sound effects and narration accompany the display, adding detail as you look across the painted battlefield.

Borodino was fought during the 1812 war between the Russian and French empires. One account of the battle records more than 70,000 casualties in a single day. Napoleon later called the Russians “invincible,” a response linked to the fierce resistance he encountered.

A collection across two levels

The museum pairs the panorama with a collection of wartime memorabilia. Uniforms and weapons give the story a material dimension, while video interactions and other displays invite visitors to engage with the subject. Children can try on a soldier’s uniform.

The exhibition is arranged across two levels, so plan to see both the objects and Roubaud’s painting. The displays focus on the battle and Napoleon’s campaign in Russia, with attention to how Russian forces resisted the French advance.

From the 1912 pavilion to Kutuzovsky Avenue

The panorama began as a work created for the centenary of the 1812 Patriotic War. Roubaud’s painting was first shown in a wooden pavilion on Chistoprudny Boulevard. The museum opened in 1912, and the panorama has been displayed in its building on Kutuzovsky Avenue since 1962.

The building stands in Fili, where a military council in 1812 decided to leave Moscow to the French army. That connection places the museum near a site tied to the campaign’s decisions as well as its fighting.
