Eduardo VII Park

Eduardo VII Park stretches uphill from Marquês de Pombal Square at the northern end of Avenida da Liberdade.

Eduardo VII Park stretches uphill from Marquês de Pombal Square at the northern end of Avenida da Liberdade. Its central hedges and Portuguese mosaic paths frame a long view down the avenue towards the Tagus. Walk to the upper viewpoint for a broader look across Lisbon, or pause in Estufa Fria, the greenhouse garden with tropical plants, palms and cacti. The park also has a playground, and its lawns and paths make room for an easy stroll away from the busy streets.

Eduardo VII Park

Eduardo VII Park rises from Marquês de Pombal Square at the northern end of Avenida da Liberdade. Its long central promenade follows the slope, with clipped hedges and patterned Portuguese mosaic paving. The view changes as you climb: look back down the park towards the avenue and square, then out across Lisbon and the Tagus from the upper viewpoint.

The park was first called Parque da Liberdade. It was renamed for British King Edward VII after his visit to Lisbon in 1903. The layout is more like a broad, inclined promenade than a level lawn, so allow for the uphill walk if you enter from the square.

Estufa Fria and the gardens

Estufa Fria, the park’s greenhouse garden, is a separate reason to make the climb. Its planting includes tropical species, palms and cacti. The greenhouse complex includes a wooden-covered section set inside a former quarry, as well as glass-roofed greenhouses. A pool and different planted habitats add variety to the walk through the garden.

The park’s central hedges and mosaic paths give the open slope its distinctive geometry. On the north side, near João Cutileiro’s monument to the Carnation Revolution of 25 April, a less familiar viewpoint looks towards parts of Baixa, the Tagus and the south bank.

A place for a longer pause

The park has a playground, picnic areas and kiosks, alongside open green space for walking or sitting. In warmer months, people gather here to relax and meet friends. The grounds also host outdoor events, including the Lisbon Book Fair in spring; seasonal celebrations bring additional activity.

If you want a quieter walk, follow the paths away from the central viewpoint and explore the gardens. For a wider route, continue downhill along Avenida da Liberdade towards Baixa. The hill makes the park less suited to anyone looking for a flat, compact garden visit, but the viewpoint and greenhouse give you two clear stops along the way.
