Warsaw University Library Garden is a free rooftop garden at Dobra 56/66, beside the University of Warsaw Library in the Powiśle district. Opened in 2002, it spreads across two levels, with planted paths, water features and places to pause. Walk between the greenery and look out over Warsaw and the Vistula River; from the terrace, the Copernicus Science Centre is also in view. The library building itself is worth a look. Come in spring or summer for the garden at its greenest, or time your visit for sunset.

The garden opened in 2002 on the roof of the Warsaw University Library. It has two levels, with paths and plantings that lead visitors around the rooftop and offer different perspectives on the city. The library building is part of the visit too: its distinctive modern design gives the garden an unusual setting among Warsaw’s urban buildings.

The lower garden and rooftop connect the library grounds with the upper level. As you walk, look for the changes in planting and the views that open between paths. Visitors can see the garden from the building as well as explore it outside, so the library’s architecture and the landscaped roof are closely linked parts of the experience.

Ponds, paths and viewpoints

Water is one of the garden’s defining features. Ponds and a stream sit among planted areas, with bridges and paved paths linking different corners. Granite sculptures and other garden structures add points of interest along the way. The layout gives you room to stroll, stop for a view or find a bench among the greenery.

From the upper garden, look across the Vistula toward Warsaw’s opposite bank. The terrace also faces the river and the Copernicus Science Centre. Views of both modern and historic parts of the city make the rooftop a useful stop for seeing how the river sits within Warsaw’s urban landscape. The garden is also a place to look down into the library from above.

Choosing when to visit

The garden is especially rewarding in spring and summer, when more of the planting is in bloom. Autumn brings changing leaf colours, while the rooftop views remain a reason to visit in other seasons. A sunset visit can add a different quality to the city and river outlooks.

Daytime can be busy, particularly when people come to walk, sit on the grass or take photographs. If you want clearer photo backgrounds or a quieter stroll, choose a less busy time. The garden is free to enter, so there is no admission ticket to arrange. Give yourself time to wander rather than treating the rooftop as a single viewpoint: the paths, water and outlooks vary as you move between its levels.
