En bref

Take the airport shuttle bus if you land between 08:00 and 20:00: the airport lists 199 MKD one way. Use the official airport taxi at any hour; its posted price list shows 1,500 denars (25 euros) to Skopje, a ride of about 23 km. Skip unofficial drivers, and check flight information in winter, when fog from November to February can cause delays.

The short answer

The cheapest way from Skopje International Airport (code SKP) to the city is the airport shuttle bus. The airport's bus page lists a one-way ticket at 199 MKD and working hours of 08:00 to 20:00, so it suits daytime and evening landings but not a night flight. The simplest way at any hour is the official airport taxi, which the airport says waits at the exit around the clock and needs no reservation. Its price list, which the airport applies from 9 February 2024 and still links, shows 1,500 denars, or 25 euros, for the 23 km to Skopje. The Skopje travel guide shows what is within walking distance of the center, and the North Macedonia guide covers entry and money for the whole country.

The airport is at Petrovec, about 21 km east of the capital according to the national tourism portal. The taxi list counts 23 km to Skopje, so treat both figures as approximate. The ride is long enough that you should not plan a tight check-in on arrival day.

Everything on this page comes from the airport's own pages, its taxi price list, the tourism portal and UK government travel advice, checked on 4 October 2026. Prices, schedules and operators change, so confirm the numbers when you travel.

The airport shuttle bus

The airport says a regular shuttle bus runs between the terminal and the city, stopping at key bus stops across Skopje, and that the timetable is prepared around flight arrivals and departures. The ticket costs 199 MKD one way, and the bus page gives the working hours as 08:00 to 20:00. The company that operates it publishes the timetable on its own site, which the airport links, so check that page for your arrival time, because the exact departures were not read for this guide.

Ask your host or the driver where to get on and where to get off, because airport stops and city stops can change. Carry small notes in denars for the fare; the airport page quotes the price in denars only, and nothing on it promises that cards or euros are accepted on board. The terminal has a currency-exchange office and cash machines according to the tourism portal, so use one before you head to the stop, and avoid changing money with street dealers: UK advice says to change money only through banks or official exchanges.

The bus makes sense when you travel light, arrive in daylight and stay near one of its stops. It makes less sense when the stops are far from your hotel, when you arrive after 20:00 or when you travel as a group of three or four, because splitting the taxi fare across a group narrows the gap with the bus. The where to stay in Skopje guide explains which areas are close to the center and which need a further ride.

The official airport taxi

The airport says taxi services are regulated by a price list displayed at the exit and in each taxi. The vehicles are white, carry a taxi sign numbered 1 to 65 and park at the exit of the terminal 24 hours a day, so there is no need to reserve. It names one company as the only operator authorized to carry passengers from the airport, and says larger groups can arrange transport by email or phone, with service to Skopje, across the country and to neighboring Balkan countries. Working hours are given as around the clock while there are landings.

The price list is a fixed table by destination, not a meter. It shows 1,500 denars (25 euros) for the 23 km to Skopje, which is the number most travelers need. For longer trips it lists 72 km to Tetovo at 3,700 denars (60 euros), 97 km to Gostivar at 4,300 denars (70 euros) and 200 km to Ohrid at 7,800 denars (130 euros). The list also shows Kumanovo, Veles, Kičevo, Debar, Struga, Bitola and cities in Kosovo, Serbia, Bulgaria, Albania and Greece.

Use the official cars. The airport describes the white, numbered taxi fleet as the only company it has authorized, so unmarked cars and drivers who approach you in the arrivals hall are not part of that arrangement. Look at the price list at the exit, confirm the destination and the fare before you get in, and ask for a receipt if you need one. If you have a complaint, the price list gives an email address for the airport's customer relations team. The list is dated 9 February 2024, so ask the driver to show the current version if the airport has published a new one.

Renting a car at the airport

The airport says 22 rental agencies operate there, and the tourism portal says numerous rent-a-car companies work there. A rental car makes sense for trips beyond the city, such as the Mavrovo National Park or a long drive to the lake, but it is rarely the right answer for the capital itself: the center is walkable, and parking is a chore.

If you rent, read the rules first. UK advice says a UK photocard license is valid, but unless you are driving a rental car or hold a residence permit you also need the 1968 international driving permit. Hire companies often set stricter requirements, such as at least two years of driving experience and a higher minimum age. The advice also lists fines for not using side lights or dipped headlights, including during the day, for using a phone while driving and for not wearing a seatbelt, and it sets the drink-driving limit at 50 milligrams per 100 milliliters of blood. Read the guide to renting a car abroad before you pay for extra cover, and see how to get to Ohrid if the lake is your next stop.

Arriving at night or in fog

A late landing is where the shuttle bus stops being an option and the taxi earns its fare. The airport operates 24 hours, and the official taxi waits while there are landings. Before you travel, send your host your flight number and landing time and ask three things. Who will open the door, and how do you reach them if the flight is delayed? Is there a reception desk at night, or a key box with a code? And can the property book a transfer at an agreed price?

Winter adds a second risk. UK advice says that from November to February there can be thick fog in Skopje and surrounding areas, with flight delays and diversions at the airport. If your plans include a tight connection or a prepaid first night, add a buffer in those months and check the flight information on the airport site. The airport's information desk is open around the clock, and the number is on its site.

Before you leave the terminal, connect to the airport's free Wi-Fi, a network called TAV Airports that needs no password, so that you can message your host or order a ride. If you lose something, the airport says the lost and found office is near baggage claim, after passport control and before customs. Set up an eSIM for North Macedonia before you fly, because data from the arrivals hall makes the first hour much easier.

Entry rules and arrival basics

North Macedonia is outside the Schengen area, so there are passport checks on arrival. UK advice for British passport holders says your passport must be valid for at least 90 days after the date you arrive, that you can visit for up to three months without a visa and that you must register with the local police within 48 hours. Hotels register you at check-in; with a private host, ask who files the registration. Declare cash of 10,000 euros or more on entry. Other nationalities follow their own rules, so check your government's advice and the host country's entry page.

UK advice also warns that illegal drugs, including cannabis, carry severe penalties, including when you transit through the airport, and that airports in North Macedonia have excellent technology for detecting illegal items, which is also used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers. Do not carry anything you cannot explain. Keep your travel insurance details on your phone and read the guide to dynamic currency conversion before you pay by card.

Mistakes to avoid

The most common error is planning on the shuttle for a night flight. It stops at 20:00 according to the airport page, so a late arrival needs a taxi or a pre-booked transfer. The second is taking an unmarked car because the driver is the first to speak to you. The third is skipping the arrival message to your host and discovering that nobody can open the door. The fourth is forgetting that winter fog can delay your plane, and booking a tight onward leg.

The last mistake is paying twice for rental cover. Read what your card and your policy already include before you accept extra insurance at the desk, and keep the fare and the price list in mind when you compare a taxi with a rental: for a single trip into town the taxi is almost always simpler.
