En bref

Fly into Ohrid's St. Paul the Apostle airport if your route allows it, and plan a taxi or rental car, because the airport says no regular shuttle bus runs. Otherwise land in Skopje and continue by bus or car, since there is no railway to Ohrid. Check bus timetables with the operator, and read the driving and registration rules before you set off. The airport taxi list shows 130 euros from Skopje airport to Ohrid.

The short answer

There are three ways to reach the lake town: fly into Ohrid's own airport, fly into Skopje and continue by bus or car, or drive in from a neighboring country. There is no fourth option by rail. The North Macedonia tourism portal describes the absence of rail traffic as the town's only transport disadvantage, so a train is not part of any plan. The Ohrid travel guide describes what you are traveling to, and the North Macedonia guide places the town in the wider trip.

The simplest route for most visitors who can find a flight is Ohrid's St. Paul the Apostle airport, about 9 km northwest of the town according to the portal. The less simple but more flexible route is Skopje, which has more flights, followed by a road journey. Which one fits depends on where you fly from, how long you stay and whether you want a car for the days around the lake.

This page quotes no bus times or bus fares, because none could be confirmed from an official timetable; the only fare it gives is the airport taxi list. Everything else comes from the airport sites, the airport taxi price list, the tourism portal and UK government travel advice, checked on 4 October 2026.

Flying to Ohrid airport

The portal says North Macedonia has two international airports, Skopje and Ohrid, and that Ohrid has flights to and from various European cities. The airport operator's site says the airport is open according to the flight timetable, so check the arrivals page for your date before you plan a late transfer.

The key fact is about transfers. The airport's own pages say there is no regular shuttle bus for passengers to Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle airport; the only organized shuttle transport is part of arranged tours and seasonal charter flights run by local travel agencies. Taxis, according to the airport, are available according to the actual arrival of flights. Six rental car agencies operate there, each listed with phone numbers. In practice that means you plan a taxi or a rental car before you land, and you ask your host to confirm a pickup if the hotel offers one.

The town is close, so the taxi ride is short compared with Skopje's. The portal puts the airport 9 km from the center. Ask the driver or the host to agree the fare before you set off if the taxi has no meter, and carry small notes in denars. If you want to avoid a negotiation, ask the property whether they can book a fixed-price transfer in advance, which also solves the problem of a late arrival.

Flying to Skopje and continuing

Skopje International Airport is about 21 km east of the capital, at Petrovec, and the portal lists numerous flights to and from European cities. The airport guide for Skopje covers the shuttle and taxi into town. For Ohrid, the next step is a road journey, because no rail line connects the two cities.

The portal lists two main bus stations in Skopje, the New Intercity Bus Station and the Kale Bus Station, and the intercity operators run from there. Do not assume a timetable from an old guide: ask the operator or your host for the current departures, the last bus of the day and whether a ticket can be bought on board or needs to be bought at the station. The airport's own taxi price list shows what a door-to-door ride costs: 200 km and 7,800 denars, or 130 euros, from Skopje airport to Ohrid, on a list the airport applies from 9 February 2024. That is a fixed fare by destination, useful for a group or a late arrival, and the Skopje airport guide explains the taxi rules. Plan the journey as a half day at least, add time for a break and avoid booking a flight out of Ohrid on the same day as an arrival bus from Skopje.

Winter adds a risk. UK advice says that from November to February thick fog can affect Skopje and surrounding areas, with flight delays and diversions at Skopje airport. If you plan to connect from a Skopje arrival to a bus or a hired car on the same day, leave a generous gap in those months, and consider sleeping a night in the capital before the road trip.

By road: bus or rental car

The portal says Ohrid has road links to Skopje, Bitola, Debar and Albania, and that the international highway E-75 runs north to south through the country. Coming overland from Serbia or Greece, you use the highway and then head toward the lake. Bulgaria and Albania have their own road links, and the portal calls them good, although driving conditions vary and UK advice warns that standards and road conditions vary widely and that accidents are common.

If you drive, read the rules first. UK advice says you can pay tolls on major roads in denars or in euros, in cash or by card. It lists fines for not using side lights or dipped headlights, including during the day, for using a mobile phone while driving, and for not wearing a seatbelt. It sets the drink-driving limit at 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood, which is lower than England's, with a heavy fine and possible imprisonment. In an accident, do not move the vehicle until the police record the incident. Emergency numbers are 192 for police, 194 for an ambulance and 196 for roadside assistance, and 112 is the general emergency number.

Car hire has its own rules. UK advice says a UK photocard driving license is valid, but unless you are driving a rental car or hold a residence permit you also need the 1968 version of the international driving permit, which cannot be bought outside the UK. Hire companies often set stricter requirements, such as at least two years of driving experience and a higher minimum age. Read the guides to renting a car abroad and to the international driving permit before you pay for extra cover.

Choosing between the options

The table sets the options side by side. It carries no times or prices on purpose, because the official sources do not publish a bus timetable and fares change.

Choose the Ohrid flight if the schedule suits you and you are happy to take a taxi from the terminal. Choose Skopje with a bus if you want more flight options and do not plan to drive, and accept that the road leg takes most of a day with a break. Choose Skopje with a rental car if you plan to visit the beaches, St. Naum or the Mavrovo National Park, which sits between Gostivar, Debar and Kičevo, and are comfortable driving abroad.

Entry rules and registration

North Macedonia is outside the Schengen area, so there are passport checks at its borders. UK advice for British passport holders says your passport must be valid for at least 90 days after the date you arrive, that you can visit for up to three months without a visa, and that you must register with the local police within 48 hours. Hotel staff register you at check-in; if you stay with a private host, ask who files the registration and keep the document until you leave. Other nationalities follow their own rules, so check your government's advice and the host country's entry page.

If your route crosses a Schengen border, such as when you arrive overland from Greece or Bulgaria, UK advice says the EU Entry/Exit System may take each passenger extra time, so allow more time at the border. The Schengen 90/180 rule explains why days in North Macedonia do not count toward the Schengen limit, and visa-free stay limits compared shows how stays here compare with neighboring countries.

Arriving late or at night

A late landing is where Ohrid's lack of an airport bus matters most. The operator says the airport is open according to the flight timetable and that taxis are available according to the actual arrival of flights, so a night flight should still find a taxi, but nothing on the airport pages promises a fixed fare or a queue of cars. Send your host your flight number and landing time before you travel, and ask three things. Who will let you in, and how do you reach them if the flight is delayed? Is there a reception desk at night, or a key box with a code? And can the property book a taxi from the airport at an agreed price?

If you arrive by road from Skopje, the same questions apply to the last bus. Ask the operator for the final departure of the day and plan a buffer for traffic and breaks, and keep the registration rule in mind: a hotel files it at check-in, while a private host needs a reminder. A small guesthouse without a night desk will not wait forever, and a delayed bag or a missed connection can push your arrival beyond the stated check-in window.

Mistakes to avoid

The most common error is expecting an airport bus at Ohrid. There is none, so plan the taxi or the rental before you land. The second is booking a tight same-day connection from Skopje to Ohrid, especially in winter, when fog can delay flights. The third is assuming a train will do the job, because it will not. The fourth is renting a car without checking the age and experience rules, or without the international driving permit where it is required.

The fifth is skipping the registration step with a private host. UK advice lists a fine, detention and a restriction on returning among the consequences of not registering, so make the question part of your booking message. The last is carrying too little cash for a bus or taxi: cards work in hotels and bigger restaurants, but the money guide explains why small amounts in denars still matter.

What to set up before you go

Download offline maps and set up an eSIM for North Macedonia before you leave, because a taxi call or a message to your host is easier with data from the arrivals hall. Keep travel insurance in place for the road trip and for swimming, and note the emergency numbers above. Once you are on the lake, where to stay in Ohrid compares the bases, and Ohrid in 2 days turns the time you have into a route.
