Kunsthal Rotterdam

Kunsthal Rotterdam is an exhibition space in Museumpark, at Westzeedijk 341.

Kunsthal Rotterdam is an exhibition space in Museumpark, at Westzeedijk 341. Designed by architect Rem Koolhaas, its modern building is part of the visit, with ramps linking galleries across two main floors. There is no permanent collection: exhibitions change throughout the year and span contemporary art, photography, fashion, design and cultural history. Check what is showing before you go, then allow time to see more than one exhibition. The on-site restaurant and café make it easy to pause between galleries.

A changing programme, not a permanent collection

Kunsthal Rotterdam

Kunsthal Rotterdam presents temporary exhibitions rather than works from a collection of its own. Its programme brings together subjects from contemporary and modern art to photography, fashion, design and cultural history. The range means the galleries can feel quite different from one visit to the next.

Several exhibitions can be on view at the same time, with large and small presentations across the building. Before setting out, check the Kunsthal website to see what is currently on. If one exhibition is your main reason for going, make it your first stop; popular displays can draw a crowd.

A building designed for movement

The Kunsthal stands at the edge of Museumpark, at Westzeedijk 341. Rem Koolhaas designed the building, which opened in 1992. Its architecture is closely tied to the visit: the interior connects exhibition spaces through sloping ramps, and the building’s concrete, steel, marble and corrugated plastic give the galleries distinct surroundings.

The layout includes two main floors and seven exhibition spaces. The galleries do not all have the same character, and the route takes you through the building rather than following a single permanent collection. The ramps can be steep for some people. A lift is available, and the entrance and restrooms are wheelchair accessible.

Planning time inside

Allow about two hours to explore the exhibitions. The actual visit depends on what is showing and how long you want to spend with each display. Arriving early or choosing a weekday can make it easier to move through busy galleries at your own pace.

There is a restaurant and café on site for a meal or drink during your visit. Lockers are available for belongings. If you are visiting at a busy time, booking ahead is recommended. Kunsthal is in Museumpark, so you can also spend time in the park around the galleries.
