Farid Belkahia Foundation

The Farid Belkahia Foundation is dedicated to the work and legacy of the Marrakech-born artist. Housed in his former atelier, the museum presents pieces from different stages of his career, giving visitors a view of how his practice developed. The collection is intimate in scale, with representative works that introduce Belkahia’s life and artistic influences.

Belkahia was born in Marrakech in 1934 and became a leading member of the Casablanca Art School. The school encouraged Moroccan artists to move beyond Orientalist styles that had been fashionable during the French Protectorate. Belkahia’s work drew on Moroccan identity and included Amazigh motifs.

Materials, workshop and garden

Some of Belkahia’s works were painted on animal skin with traditional henna dyes. These materials offer a distinctive way to encounter his use of Moroccan artistic references. The preserved workshop adds context to the artworks: its untouched interior gives a sense of the space in which he worked.

Outside, the garden provides a quiet place to sit, and a pyramid with steps looks over the Palm Grove. The museum’s compact size makes it possible to focus on details in the collection before spending time outdoors. If the entrance appears shut, ring the bell beside the gate.
