Sea Gate

Sea Gate, also called Vrata od Mora, is the main entrance to Kotor’s Old Town, facing the waterfront.

Sea Gate, also called Vrata od Mora, is the main entrance to Kotor’s Old Town, facing the waterfront. Built in 1555 during Venetian rule, its stone arch leads into Arms Square, with the Clock Tower ahead. Look above the passage for a relief of the Virgin Mary with Christ and Saints Tryphon and Bernard, and for the inscription marking Kotor’s liberation on November 21, 1944. From the gate, narrow lanes lead to the town’s churches, palaces and other historic squares.

A Venetian-era entrance

The Sea Gate is Kotor Old Town’s principal entrance from the waterfront. It was built in 1555, when the town was under Venetian rule, and its Renaissance-Baroque design is visible in the stone arch and columns. An older gate, thought to date from the 13th or 14th century, lies beneath it.

The arch opens directly onto Arms Square, the Old Town’s main piazza. The Clock Tower stands opposite the entrance, making the square an immediate point of orientation before you continue into the surrounding streets.

Carvings and the liberation inscription

Look above and around the arch for the carved relief of the Virgin Mary with Christ, flanked by Saints Tryphon and Bernard. The gate also carries a date marking Kotor’s liberation from Nazi occupation: November 21, 1944. These details give the entrance a history that spans both Venetian rule and the events of the Second World War.

Starting a walk through the Old Town

The Sea Gate is one of three entrances to Kotor’s Old Town and the busiest of them. From Arms Square, you can explore the narrow lanes and medieval buildings, or continue to landmarks such as St. Tryphon Cathedral and the Maritime Museum. The climb towards Kotor Fortress is another option for a longer visit and views over the town.

Tour groups often meet near the entrance, and crowds can gather here during the tourist season. An early or late visit gives you more room to look closely at the stonework and take photographs.
