Kotor Town Walls

Kotor Town Walls climb from the Old Town up St John’s Hill, with views across the rooftops and the Bay of Kotor.

Kotor Town Walls climb from the Old Town up St John’s Hill, with views across the rooftops and the Bay of Kotor. The fortifications began in the 9th century and grew over many centuries, reaching the San Giovanni Fortress above town. The steep route includes about 1,350 steps, so sturdy shoes and water will help. Start early or later in the day to avoid the midday heat, and pause along the way to take in the old town from above.

Fortifications climbing St John’s Hill

Kotor’s walls began rising above the town in the 9th century. The defensive circuit was completed by the 14th century, then reinforced and extended in later centuries, with work continuing into the 19th. The form seen today developed over time, including during the 17th and 18th centuries.

The fortifications encircle the Old Town and continue up the steep mountainside to San Giovanni Fortress. Their route links the town’s defences with the high ground above it, where the walls follow the slope toward the summit.

The climb to San Giovanni Fortress

The uphill route from the Old Town involves about 1,350 steps and an ascent of roughly 1,200 metres along the fortifications. The walk can take from about 30 minutes to more than an hour, depending on pace, photo stops and detours. Sturdy footwear is useful on the steep path, and carrying water helps in the heat.

There are entry points near the River Gate and behind Trg od Salate. The North Gate is another signposted starting point. Some sections are inaccessible, so the full route may not be open throughout.

Views over the bay and Old Town

The climb gives changing views of Kotor’s stone rooftops and the Bay of Kotor, with the San Giovanni Fortress at the top. The walls are also visible from the Old Town below, where towers, ramparts and bastions form part of the town’s historic defences.

Kotor’s walls and the city’s natural and cultural-historical area were included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1979. For a more comfortable walk, choose the cooler early morning or go later in the day, rather than tackling the steps in midday heat.
