The butterfly garden is the sanctuary’s main draw. Butterflies fly freely around the walk-through space, giving you a chance to see them at close range as you follow the paths. More than 20 butterfly species have been recorded here, including the Malayan Birdwing and Rajah Brooke’s Birdwing, Malaysia’s national butterfly.

The garden is part of a larger, leafy site in Ayer Keroh. Take time to look for butterflies among the plants instead of hurrying straight through. The sanctuary also has a koi garden and a Secret Garden with bridges among tall trees, so the visit includes quieter corners as well as animal enclosures.

Reptiles, birds and animal encounters

Beyond the butterflies, the sanctuary keeps reptiles, birds, insects and other animals. You may see snakes, lizards, crocodiles, tortoises, emus, koi and meerkats, among other species. Displays and enclosures give the visit a learning element, and staff explain animals during demonstrations and encounters.

Some activities let you get closer to the animals. Depending on what is running, you may be able to feed koi, rabbits, birds or other animals, pet an iguana or hedgehog, or hold a snake. The RM8 feeding pack is an optional way to join feeding activities. The feed comes in small quantities, so check what the pack includes before buying it. Not every encounter is available at all times; ask about the schedule when you arrive.

Planning your visit

Set aside two to three hours if you want to see the grounds and take part in activities. A quick walk through can be much shorter, but you could miss demonstrations or encounters if you do not check the schedule. Around 3:30pm is a suggested time to visit, when the park is cooler and shaded.

You can buy tickets at the counter, but advance purchase is recommended to avoid a queue. There is a cafe on site, though food choices are limited to drinks and snacks, so plan a meal elsewhere if you need one. Explanations over the speakers are in Malay; a translation app may help if you do not understand the language.
