Ponte dell'Accademia

Ponte dell’Accademia is a wooden pedestrian bridge over the Grand Canal, linking Venice’s San Marco and Dorsoduro districts.

Ponte dell’Accademia is a wooden pedestrian bridge over the Grand Canal, linking Venice’s San Marco and Dorsoduro districts. The reason to cross is the view: look east for the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute framed by the canal and its palazzi, or turn the other way to follow the water toward the lagoon. It is one of only four bridges across the Grand Canal and sits beside the Gallerie dell’Accademia. The bridge itself is simple; come for the panorama and a short pause above the water.

A bridge between San Marco and Dorsoduro

Ponte dell'Accademia

Ponte dell’Accademia crosses the Grand Canal near its southern end, connecting San Marco with Dorsoduro. It is one of only four bridges across the city’s main waterway. The crossing links Campo San Vidal with the area of the former church of Santa Maria della Carità, and the Gallerie dell’Accademia stands nearby on the Dorsoduro side.

The bridge is best known for its outlook, not its architecture. Its wooden structure gives it a different appearance from Venice’s other Grand Canal crossings, but the view is the reason to stop. From the top, the canal opens in both directions, with boats and palazzi along the water.

The view toward Santa Maria della Salute

Look east for the familiar view down the Grand Canal toward the dome of the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute. The church, canal and buildings along the water form a broad scene that is especially appealing to photographers. From the other side, the waterway leads toward the lagoon.

Sunrise and sunset are popular times to take photographs here. The light changes the colours of the buildings and reflects across the canal. The bridge can draw a crowd, especially when people stop to take pictures, so an early visit can give you more space to enjoy the outlook.

A bridge rebuilt over time

A bridge at this location was first opened to the public in 1854, during Austrian rule. It was the second bridge built across the Grand Canal, after Rialto. The original structure was made of iron and later faced structural problems. The bridge has since been rebuilt and restored; the wooden crossing seen today dates to the 20th century.

Its name comes from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, the art academy once housed nearby. The Gallerie dell’Accademia remains close to the bridge, making the crossing a convenient stop before or after a visit to the museum.

Fitting the bridge into your walk

Cross Ponte dell’Accademia as you move between San Marco and Dorsoduro, or make a brief detour for the canal view. The Gallerie dell’Accademia is nearby, and the bridge is also close to vaporetto stops. If you are short on time, a pause for photographs is enough; the main attraction is the panorama from above the water.

Expect other people to stop on the bridge for pictures. Keep to the side when taking your own, and leave space for pedestrians to pass.
