Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Moisè is a small church on Salizada San Moisè, a short walk from Piazza San Marco. Its crowded Baroque façade is covered in carved figures and details, including camels; inside, the atmosphere is quieter, with marble decoration, paintings and a strong view along the nave to the crucifix. The church’s origins date to around 800, and it was rebuilt more than once. Stop in to look closely at the exterior, then take a quiet moment inside.

The church’s origins date to around 800. It was rebuilt several times, including after a fire in 1105; a later rebuilding took place in the 17th century. The church is dedicated to Moses and also honours Moisè Venier, who funded a rebuilding in the 9th century. Much of the building dates from the Baroque period. Work on the main façade began in 1668, giving the church its striking exterior of architecture and sculpture.

Sculpture on the façade

The façade is the church’s defining feature. Carved figures and ornamental details cover its surface, so it rewards a close look rather than a passing glance. Among the details are two camels. The dense decoration contrasts with the quieter space inside. The exterior’s visual weight makes San Moisè easy to notice as you walk through this part of Venice.

Inside San Moisè

Inside, the long nave draws the eye toward the altar and a prominent crucifix. Marble decoration and paintings give the interior a richly Baroque character, while the layout remains clear and direct. Look for Tintoretto’s The Washing of the Feet and the altarpiece showing God handing the tablets to Moses. The church is also used as a place for quiet prayer and reflection; visitors should keep their voices low and respect those who are praying.
