Castel Thun

Castel Thun sits on a hill above Vigo di Ton in the Val di Non, not far from Trento.

Castel Thun sits on a hill above Vigo di Ton in the Val di Non, not far from Trento. It is one of the most imposing noble residences in Trentino, and the whole building is open to visitors. Inside, the rooms hold empire-style furniture, art collections and historical objects such as horse carriages. Outside, the garden looks out over the valleys of Trentino.

History and the Thun family

Castel Thun
Castel Thun

The castle stands on a hill that controls the way into the valley. Towers, ramparts, ditches and walkways surround the building, which was built as a fortified seat and later converted into a residence.

The Thun family, an old noble house linked to the nearby village of Ton, gave Trentino four prince-bishops. The Province of Trento acquired the castle in 1992, restored it and opened it to the public. Before that, it belonged to the family.

Inside the castle

The ground floor holds the public rooms, and the first floor holds the more formal state rooms. Across the building you will find furniture in the empire style, paintings, art, and objects such as horse carriages. Information signs appear throughout, and the rooms follow the family's private life from one to the next.

An audio guide is available. It is not required, but there is a lot to learn about the family's long history, so it is worth taking. The toilets are at the entrance, so it makes sense to use them before you start the tour.

The garden, the cafeteria and local products

The garden is the place to stop after the rooms. Its terraces give wide views over the valleys below, and it is a good spot for a picnic. Bring your own food and drink if you want to eat outdoors, or use the cafeteria behind the castle for pizza, local wine and beer.

Vendors sometimes sell local products outside the castle, including from a minivan along the walk back to the car park. Have cash or a card ready if you plan to buy.

The car park is about 250 metres downhill from the castle, so the walk back is uphill. Allow time for it when you plan the day.
