Porto Flavia

Porto Flavia is a former mining port carved into the cliffs at Masua, near Iglesias in southwestern Sardinia.

Porto Flavia is a former mining port carved into the cliffs at Masua, near Iglesias in southwestern Sardinia. Built in the early 20th century, it used two tunnels and a mechanical loading arm to transfer ore directly to ships below. A guided visit takes you through the rock-cut passages to views over the sea and the waters where cargo ships once waited. The site combines mining history with a dramatic coastal setting; wear shoes suited to walking on uneven ground.

Porto Flavia

Porto Flavia was built in the early 20th century as part of the mining industry around Masua and Iglesias. The port was cut into the rock above the sea, giving ore a direct route from the mine to waiting ships. Zinc and lead were among the minerals loaded there.

The site’s design includes two tunnels, each about 600 metres long, and a mechanical arm that transferred ore to ships below. Its purpose was practical: move minerals out by sea without bringing them down to shore for loading.

The guided visit follows the old mining passages inside the cliff and reaches the sea-facing part of the port. Tours take around 30 to 60 minutes, though accounts of the visit describe some time spent waiting for another group to pass. The lower level is not accessible.

There is limited time to stop for photographs during the tour, so have your camera ready when the guide allows a pause. The passages and surrounding ground can be uneven; comfortable walking shoes are useful.
