The Jewish Museum stands beside Rome’s Great Synagogue in the historic Jewish Ghetto.

The Jewish Museum stands beside Rome’s Great Synagogue in the historic Jewish Ghetto. Its exhibits trace more than 2,000 years of Jewish life in the city through religious objects, art, documents and pieces from the Ghetto era. A guided visit adds context to the synagogue’s history and architecture, and can include the smaller Spanish Synagogue. Allow time for both the museum and the tour to understand the community’s story across centuries.

A history spanning centuries

The museum tells the story of Rome’s Jewish community from ancient times to the present. Its collections include religious objects, art and documents, giving visitors material glimpses of daily life and religious practice across different periods.

The collection includes more than 400 silver pieces, 900 textiles and 100 marble sculptures, as well as documents. Objects from the years of the Ghetto, established in 1555 and lasting until 1870, form a significant part of the displays.

The museum first opened in 1960. It was renovated and reopened to the public in 2005, with exhibition halls devoted to the history of Jewish life in Rome.
