Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pace

Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pace is a Renaissance and Baroque church a short walk from Piazza Navona, at Arco della Pace 5.

Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pace is a Renaissance and Baroque church a short walk from Piazza Navona, at Arco della Pace 5. Its curved façade frames a compact space filled with art and architectural detail. Look for Raphael’s fresco of the four Sibyls with angels in the Chigi Chapel, as well as paintings by Orazio Gentileschi and Pietro da Cortona’s work on the church. The adjacent Bramante Cloisters are a separate highlight, with Renaissance architecture and exhibitions. Entry to the church is free.

Raphael’s Sibyls in the Chigi Chapel

The church’s best-known work is Raphael’s fresco of four Sibyls, ancient prophetesses, accompanied by angels. It is located above the arch of the first chapel on the right, in the Chigi Chapel. The figures receive a prophecy concerning Christ’s coming and resurrection.

The fresco dates to 1514 and was commissioned by the banker Agostino Chigi. Its lively composition and colour show Raphael’s mature work. Look up above the chapel arch to see the figures together.

Pietro da Cortona’s church façade

In the 17th century, Pietro da Cortona reshaped the church. The curved, two-level façade gives the entrance its distinctive form, set into the tight streets near Piazza Navona. Its design includes a portico that curves toward the viewer.

The church’s interior combines Renaissance elements with Baroque decoration. An octagonal tribune, reshaped by da Cortona in the 1650s, is another part of the architectural scheme. The complex makes effective use of a restricted site.

The Bramante Cloisters

The adjacent Bramante Cloisters are a notable Renaissance work and can host exhibitions and international events. They are separate from the church interior, so check access arrangements if you want to include them in your visit.

The cloisters have also been used for exhibitions and cultural events. Their programme can make this part of the complex a different kind of stop from the church itself.

A church close to Piazza Navona

Santa Maria della Pace stands between Piazza Navona and the Tiber, on the site of an earlier church. The area was once associated with water sellers who cleaned river water of mud. A story attached to the place tells of a soldier striking an image of the Virgin Mary with a stone, after which it began to bleed.

The church was rebuilt in the late 15th century and is dedicated to Our Lady of Peace. Its location makes it easy to pair with a walk around Piazza Navona, though the church remains a place of Catholic worship. Keep your visit quiet and dress appropriately.
