Near Milano Centrale at Via Fabio Filzi 22, the Pirelli Tower is a modernist skyscraper designed by Gio Ponti and built as the Pirelli company’s headquarters. Its narrow profile and tapered sides make it a striking sight from the station square. The tower is now used by Lombardy’s regional government, so public access is occasional rather than routine. When the 31st-floor terrace opens for special events, you can look out over Milan and the railway station from above.

Pirelli Tower

The Pirelli Tower stands near Milano Centrale, at Via Fabio Filzi 22. It was built between 1955 and 1959 as the headquarters of the Pirelli company, on ground that had previously held a Pirelli factory. Architect Gio Ponti designed the tower with engineers Pier Luigi Nervi and Arturo Danusso. At 127 metres, it was once Italy’s tallest building and the first to rise above the height of Milan’s Duomo.

Its slim shape and sides that taper towards the ends give the skyscraper a distinctive profile. The design attracted attention beyond Milan and influenced later towers, including New York’s Pan Am Building. The Pirelli Tower also appeared in the opening credits of Michelangelo Antonioni’s film La Notte.

The building now houses Lombardy’s regional government. It is not a regular public attraction, but the 31st-floor observation terrace has opened for occasional events, including FAI days. On those dates, visitors can see Milan and Milano Centrale from above. Check for a confirmed public opening before making the tower the focus of your plans.

A small plane struck the building in 2002, after which it underwent restoration. The tower remains associated with the Pirelli name, and its upper floor can also be hired for private celebrations. The square outside is a convenient place to appreciate the building’s full height before continuing from the station area.
