Newman University Church stands at 87a St Stephen’s Green, beside the park in central Dublin.

Newman University Church stands at 87a St Stephen’s Green, beside the park in central Dublin. Founded by John Henry Newman for the Catholic University of Ireland, it is a Catholic church with a richly decorated interior and an intimate scale. Enter through the Romanesque porch, then pause in the atrium to read its memorial plaques. Inside, look for carved stonework, warm wood and stained glass in the small chapel on the left. Its distinct architecture makes this a quiet stop for church art and design.

Founded for a new Catholic university

Newman University Church was built in 1855 and 1856 for the newly established Catholic University of Ireland. John Henry Newman founded the church. Its design draws on the Byzantine style, reflecting the architect’s aversion to Gothic architecture. Marble and serpentine from different parts of Ireland add color to the interior.

The church was built in the gardens beside and behind 87 St Stephen’s Green. The house at that address dates to 1730 and served as the church’s presbytery until it was sold in 1988.

The porch and the atrium

The Romanesque porch was added a few years after the church. Its polychromatic brickwork is set off by short columns and cushion capitals carved with symbols of the four Evangelists and six angelic figures. Above the main door, a colored arch frames three small windows and an ornamental metal cross.

Fr William H. Anderdon gave the porch to the church. Newman appointed him chaplain in 1856, and he remained in the role until 1863. After passing through the porch, visitors descend six steps into the atrium, where wall plaques commemorate people connected with Irish history and Catholic life.

The bell tower

A small belfry sits above the porch. The original bell is now in the administration block at the Belfield campus. Electronic chimes, given by John and Isobel Foley, are housed in the belfry.
