Ubud is a cluster of villages rather than one town, and the area you choose decides how much you walk, how loud your nights are and whether you need a driver for breakfast. The Ubud travel guide covers the sights; this page settles where to sleep. For the wider picture, see the Indonesia guide.

A first-time visitor should usually stay in the center, because it puts the market, the palace, the cafes and the Monkey Forest within a short walk. If you already know you want views, rice fields or silence, one of the outer areas is better. None of them is far from the others, and most stays are 10 to 30 minutes apart by car.

How to choose

Three questions narrow the choice. Do you want to walk to dinner, or are you happy with a short ride? Do you care more about a view from the room than about the street outside? And will you rent a scooter or hire a driver for the sights, or rely on walking and the odd taxi?

Prices below are relative bands: $ for budget, $$ for mid-range and $$$ for upscale. They compare areas with each other and do not quote nightly rates. In Ubud the calendar moves prices more than the area does: July, August and the weeks around Christmas are dearest, and the wet months from about November to March are cheaper.

Property types differ by area. In the center you find small hotels and guesthouses along the main streets. On the ridge and in the villages you find boutique stays, family compounds with a few rooms and villa-style rooms with a plunge pool. Whatever you pick, check how many steps lead to the room, whether the road is lit at night and how the host arranges airport transfers.

Central Ubud is the stretch around Jalan Raya, Monkey Forest Road and the streets that connect them. The palace, the market, the Saraswati temple and the entrance to the Monkey Forest are all within a short walk, and the cafes, yoga studios and nightly dance performances are on the same streets. For a first stay, it is the simplest place to be.

The price of that convenience is noise. Traffic is heavy on the main roads, motorbikes run late, and the pavements are narrow and uneven. Rooms set back from the road or on the upper floors are quieter, and a room behind a courtyard often costs a little more than one on the street. Ask which way the window faces before you book.

Central Ubud is also the best place to find a driver on the spot, join a cooking class or book a morning walk. It suits travelers who plan to spend two or three nights, eat out and use the hotel as a base for day trips. It suits travelers who want a view less well.

À éviter si you want silence, rice fields at the door or a pool with a view. Penestanan, Sayan or Tegallalang suits you better.

In the heart of Ubud, the palace, the market and the Monkey Forest are all walkable.

2. Penestanan and Sayan

Best for

Penestanan sits on the ridge west of the center, across the Campuhan bridge, and Sayan runs along the river valley further on. Both have boutique stays, family compounds and villa rooms with views over rice fields and the valley. The lanes are narrow and some are stepped, so they feel far from the traffic even though the center is about 10 to 15 minutes away by taxi or scooter.

This is the best choice for couples, writers and anyone who wants to sit on a balcony in the morning. It is also the choice for travelers who like a walk before breakfast: the Campuhan Ridge Walk starts nearby and is at its best early. The trade-off is that dinner usually means a ride, and some lanes are dark and steep at night.

If you have heavy bags, ask the property how you reach the room. Some stays are at the end of a flight of steps, and cars cannot always reach the door. A host who sends a driver or helps with bags is worth a lot here.

À éviter si you do not want steps in the dark or a ride to dinner. Central Ubud suits you better.

Penestanan and Sayan suit travelers who prefer valley views and quiet nights to the center.

3. Nyuh Kuning and Pengosekan

Best for
Quiet lanes, walkers
Walkability
Walk to the Monkey Forest

About 1–1.5 hours

South of the Monkey Forest, Nyuh Kuning and Pengosekan are village lanes with craft workshops, small guesthouses and temple gates. It feels like a quiet part of Bali that still has its daily rhythm: offerings on the steps, children on bicycles and woodcarvers at work. The Monkey Forest is a short walk, and the center is a short ride or a longer walk.

These villages suit travelers who want calm without leaving the area. They are good for walkers and cyclists, and rooms are often in family-run guesthouses and small hotels at mid-range prices. The lanes are narrow, the evening scene is mostly local, and restaurants close earlier than in the center.

Choose this area if you prefer a village feel and do not need a bar at the door. A driver or a ride app handles the rest, and the Monkey Forest side of the village is a pleasant evening stroll when the day tours have gone.

À éviter si you want a lively evening scene or cafes on every corner. Central Ubud suits you better.

4. Tegallalang

Best for
Rice fields, quiet
Walkability
Driver needed
To airport
About 1.5 hours
Price band
$$

Tegallalang lies north of Ubud, about 20 to 30 minutes by car, around the terraces the district is known for. Villa-style stays and small hotels sit among rice fields, with pools and views that you pay a premium for in the center. Mornings here are the best part: you can see the terraces without the midday crowds.

The drawback is distance. Dinner, a market or a dance show means a driver or a ride, and rides can be hard to find at night. Most guests rely on the hotel for transport, so ask how the property arranges it and what the cost is. Restaurants beyond the hotel are few, and some stays have a dining room that closes early.

Tegallalang suits travelers on a short, restful trip with a driver, or those who want to base for the terraces and the temples of the north and east. It suits those who want to wander the center on foot much less well.

À éviter si you plan evenings in the center or travel without a driver. Central Ubud or Nyuh Kuning suits you better.

Which base suits which trip?

Match the base to what you came for. A first visit with temples, food and a dance night fits central Ubud. A honeymoon or a writing week fits Penestanan or Sayan. A slow week with walks and a craft class fits Nyuh Kuning. A short stay with a driver and a focus on the terraces fits Tegallalang.

Pura Kebo Edan, Ubud: brown bamboo hut
Pura Kebo Edan, Ubud

Many travelers split the stay. Two nights in the center for the sights, then two on the ridge or in the north for views and quiet, works well and costs little extra. If you also plan time on the coast, compare Ubud, Canggu or Seminyak before you fix the order, because the transfer between them is long. Our Ubud in 3 days itinerary shows how the days fit around each base.

What about noise, mosquitoes and the wet season?

Ubud is green because it rains, and the wet months from about November to March bring afternoon showers and more insects. Choose a room with good screens or a mosquito net, and ask whether the property has a covered path to the room. In the dry months, the main noise comes from traffic and from temple ceremonies, which can include music and drums late in the evening. Ceremonies are part of daily life here, so earplugs are a better answer than a complaint.

If you work remotely, ask about the wifi before you book, and look for a quiet corner or a desk. Signal and speed vary widely between properties, and between rooms in the same property. Also ask about hot water, laundry and whether the host can arrange a driver, a massage or a class. The best stays in Ubud answer those questions without fuss.

Booking tips

Book early for July, August and the Christmas to New Year weeks, and for any weekend that falls near a major holiday. If you want lower rates and can accept showers, the wet months from about November to March are cheaper. Choose a flexible or refundable rate, and read the cancellation terms and the cover in your travel insurance.

Check what the rate includes. Some stays add breakfast, some charge for transfers, and some add taxes and service on top of the listed price. Compare totals, not the nightly number. Ask the host about airport transfers: a pre-booked car is usually simpler than negotiating at the arrivals hall, and some hosts include a pickup for longer stays.

Before you fly, read our guide to the Bali tourist levy and e-VoA, and set up an eSIM so that maps and driver chats work from the airport. For wider planning, see getting around Indonesia.

FAQ

What is the best area to stay in Ubud for a first visit?

Central Ubud. You can walk to the palace, the market, cafes and the Monkey Forest, and most drivers and transfers start there. Expect more noise and traffic than in the outer areas.

Is it better to stay in central Ubud or on the ridge?

Central Ubud for convenience and evenings out; the ridge at Penestanan and Sayan for valley views and quiet. The ridge is a short ride from the center, and the lanes include steps.

Can you walk everywhere in Ubud?

In the center, mostly yes, though pavements are narrow and the roads are busy. For the terraces, temples and waterfalls you need a driver, a scooter or a ride app.

How far is Ubud from the airport?

About 1 to 1.5 hours by car from Ngurah Rai in normal traffic, and longer at rush hour. A pre-booked transfer avoids haggling after a long flight.

When should I book a hotel in Ubud?

As soon as dates are firm for July, August and the Christmas to New Year weeks. Shoulder months are easier, but small boutique stays on the ridge still fill early.
