Immaculate Conception Church

Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church stands on a small hillock above Church Square in Panaji.

Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church stands on a small hillock above Church Square in Panaji. Its white Portuguese Baroque façade is reached by a double flight of zigzag stairs that meet at the top. A chapel for arriving sailors stood here in the 16th century, and the present church replaced it in the early 1600s. Inside are colorful altars and statues, and the bell is among the largest in Goa. The façade is lit at night, and the church is at its busiest around the feast on 8 December. Entry is sometimes restricted, so check before you go.

A chapel for sailors from Lisbon

Before Panaji grew into the state capital, this hill was the first stop for sailors arriving from Lisbon. A small chapel stood here in the 16th century, and crews came to give thanks for a safe crossing before continuing up the river to Old Goa. The present church replaced that chapel in the early 1600s and is built in the Portuguese Baroque style.

The church faces Church Square, known locally as Praça da Igreja, and sits on a slight rise above the street. It is the spiritual and geographic center of Panaji, and local people hold it in high regard.

The staircase and the white façade

The staircase is the first thing most people notice. Two flights rise from either side and meet at the central entrance. Because the church stands high, the design takes up less ground than a single straight flight would. Palm trees line the sides, and the building rises above the busy road in front of it.

The façade is white, with two towers and a bell set between them. The tiered shape has led people to compare the whole building to a wedding cake. Climbing the steps gives a view over Panaji, and the church is lit after dark. The exterior has appeared in many Bollywood films, and photographers, including wedding photographers, often work here.

Inside the church

The interior is more colorful than the white exterior suggests. It has carved wooden altars and statues of saints. Two altars flank the sides, one dedicated to Jesus and the other to Our Lady of the Rosary.

The bell is among the largest in Goa. It was brought from the ruins of the St. Augustine complex in Old Goa.

This is a working Catholic church, so dress modestly and keep your voice low. Shorts are not allowed. The church has been closed to visitors at times for renovation, and its doors are often shut outside service times, so check before you plan a visit around the interior.

The feast of 8 December

The feast of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception falls on 8 December and is one of the best-known Christian festivals in Goa. In Panaji the celebrations run for three days. A large fair sets up near the church, and the building is lit in bright colors. Christmas and New Year follow, and the church is decorated with lights through the season.

Expect crowds around the feast. If you want to see the church with fewer people, choose another time of year.

Around the church

Campal Gardens and Panaji market are beside the church. The market is known for bookshops with titles on Goan history and for a shop selling cashew nuts. The Goa State Museum is about five minutes on foot on the bank of the Mandovi river, and Fontainhas, the old Portuguese quarter, is a short walk east. Because the surroundings are so walkable, it is easier to leave the car or taxi near the gardens and see these places on foot.
