Nek Chand Rock Garden

Nek Chand Rock Garden is a sculpture garden in Sector 1 of Chandigarh, between Sukhna Lake and the Capitol Building.

Nek Chand Rock Garden is a sculpture garden in Sector 1 of Chandigarh, between Sukhna Lake and the Capitol Building. It covers about 40 acres and is built from urban and industrial waste: broken bangles, ceramic tiles, porcelain cups, electrical fittings and stone. Figures of people and animals stand along narrow paths, beside low archways and in open courtyards, with artificial waterfalls along the way. Nek Chand began the work in 1957 as a private project. Allow two to three hours to walk all three phases, and wear shoes that cope with uneven stone steps.

How the garden began

Nek Chand was a government official, a road inspector in Chandigarh, and he started the garden in 1957 in his spare time. He worked on it in secret. At that stage the work was not permitted and could have been demolished.

He built it from material left over when more than 50 villages were cleared to make way for the new city. Stones, debris and scrap that others had thrown out became the first sculptures. Self-taught as an artist, he kept adding to the site until it grew to about 40 acres.

Today the garden is open to the public, and it is often described as an open-air museum of recycled art.

What the sculptures are made of

Almost everything you see is reused material. Broken glass bangles, ceramic tiles, porcelain cups, electrical waste, plastic bottles, auto parts, forks, frames and discarded industrial fittings are set into walls, pathways and figures.

The figures include people, animals, birds, dancers and musicians, many standing in different poses along the paths. Some of the walls and structures are made of stone alone, and the mosaic work in broken ceramic and bangles adds colour to them.

The entrance area can look quiet at first, with few statues in view. The sculptures become denser as you walk further in, and the long rows of stone figures come toward the end of the route.

Walking the three phases

The garden is laid out as a sequence of spaces: narrow stone archways, low doorways, courtyards and small interlinked waterfalls. Passages can be tight, and some doorways are low enough that you will duck.

Near the first waterfall, artists sketch portraits of visitors. The charge quoted for a sketch is ₹500, so agree on it before you sit down.

Around the halfway point you can choose to exit or carry on toward the Doll Garden, which takes about another hour. A colourful doll display is part of this section.

Phase 3 is the most playful part. Large traditional rope swings hang from tall concrete arches, and there are laughing mirrors that distort your reflection. A small fish aquarium section is aimed at children. Exploring all three phases on foot takes about two to three hours.

Planning the visit

Adult tickets cost ₹30. Parking is free, and small shops near the entrance sell snacks and souvenirs inspired by the garden. Food options inside are few, and prices are higher than in the city, so eat beforehand or bring water.

The steps are uneven and the passages are narrow, so strollers and wheelchairs are hard to push through. Senior visitors may find the full route tiring, which is why the midway exit is useful.

The garden sits near other stops on a Chandigarh itinerary. Sukhna Lake is close by, and a boat ride there at sundown suits the end of a day. Pinjore Gardens is a longer trip that also fits a full day out.
