The museum’s collection began with a donation from Georgios I. Katsigras, a surgeon who assembled the works in the 1950s and 1960s. The gallery was founded in 1983 following his gift to the municipality.

Among the artists represented are Georgios Jakobides, Nikolaos Gyzis, Konstantinos Volanakis, Demetrios Galanis and Konstantinos Parthenis. Gyzis belonged to the Munich School, Volanakis is associated with Greek seascapes, and Galanis was a close friend of Picasso. Together, the works offer an introduction to major names in Greek art of the 19th and 20th centuries.
