The Industrial Museum of Ermoupolis traces Syros’ industrial past through machinery, tools and everyday objects from the island’s workshops and factories. It occupies four former industrial buildings in Ermoupoli, opposite the General Hospital. Look for the giant looms, equipment from textile, shipbuilding and printing trades, and the Enfield 8000, an electric car built in Greece in the 1970s. A short film explains how loukoumi is made. Some written information may not be available in English, so a camera translation app can help.
Four former industrial buildings

The museum occupies four 19th-century industrial buildings in Ermoupoli: the Kornilaki tannery, the Anairoysi shoe factory, the Velissaropoulou weaving mill and the Katsimanti paint factory. The buildings stand opposite the General Hospital, on Geor. Papandreou Street.
The collection began with an exhibition that opened in May 2000. Its focus is the island’s industrial history, including the trades and workshops that shaped Syros during its industrial era.
Machines, tools and everyday objects

Exhibits cover textile production, tanning, printing, shipbuilding, mechanics and glasswork. You can see old industrial machinery, tools and household appliances, as well as large looms from the island’s weaving trade. Maps, images and original architectural and urban plans document the development of Syros from the late 17th to the mid-20th century.
The museum also holds a digital audio and visual archive with former workers’ testimonies, along with maps and plans. Some visitors find the displays easier to follow with additional context. If the written information is in Greek, a camera translation app may help you read it.
The Enfield 8000 and loukoumi production
One of the museum’s distinctive exhibits is the Enfield 8000, an electric car produced in Greece in the 1970s. The car was designed by an Anglo-Greek company and is described as functional.
A film explains how loukoumi is made, linking the island’s well-known sweet to its workshop history. The collection also includes artifacts from the wreck of the Patrice steamship. Ask staff about the exhibits if you would like more detail, and check whether the Aneroussis lead shot factory is open during your visit.
