Glyka Nera beach

Glyka Nera, or Sweet Water Beach, is a pebble beach on Crete’s southern coast, set beneath steep cliffs.

Glyka Nera, or Sweet Water Beach, is a pebble beach on Crete’s southern coast, set beneath steep cliffs. Freshwater springs seep up through the pebbles, giving the sea a cool edge and the beach its name. Reach it by boat from Hora Sfakion or on a rocky coastal trail; the walk from the road takes about 30 minutes. Bring shoes with grip, then swim, snorkel or rest beneath the few trees. Part of the beach is clothing optional, and a fenced area is closed because of falling-rock risk.

Glyka Nera means Sweet Water, a name linked to freshwater that rises through the pebbles. The springs flow into the Libyan Sea, so the water can feel cooler here than at other beaches. The shore is made of pebbles and stones, with clear water for swimming and snorkeling.

The beach sits below steep cliffs on Crete’s southern coast. Trees provide some shade, but shaded space is limited. A section of the beach is clothing optional.

Getting to the beach

You can reach Glyka Nera by boat from Hora Sfakion or by walking down a coastal trail from the road. The walk takes about 30 minutes and follows rocky, steep sections, so wear shoes with grip and take water. The route is part of the coastal trail between Chora Sfakion and Loutro; the longer walk from Loutro is a different approach.

Some parts of the beach are fenced off because of falling-rock risk. Stay outside these closed areas. Sunbeds and umbrellas may be available, and a small seasonal taverna has been noted at the beach, but facilities are limited.
