Place des Vosges

Place des Vosges is a formal garden square in Le Marais, on the boundary between Paris’s 3rd and 4th arrondissements.

Place des Vosges is a formal garden square in Le Marais, on the boundary between Paris’s 3rd and 4th arrondissements. Its matching red-brick façades and stone arcades frame paths, lawns, four fountains and an equestrian statue of Louis XIII. Take a quiet break on a bench, walk beneath the vaulted galleries or browse their shops and galleries. The square is also home to Maison de Victor Hugo, the writer’s former residence, now a museum. In autumn, the trees turn shades of gold and amber.

A square planned for Paris

Place des Vosges was created under King Henri IV between 1605 and 1612. It opened in 1612 for celebrations marking the engagement of Louis XIII and Anne of Austria. First called Place Royale, it is considered Paris’s oldest planned square. The name Place des Vosges came later, after the French Revolution, in recognition of the Vosges region, the first to pay taxes requested by the new government.

The square helped make the Marais fashionable with Paris’s upper classes. Its regular plan and coordinated buildings set it apart from streets that developed less uniformly. The surrounding residences date from the 17th and 18th centuries; their brick façades and pale stone details give the square its distinctive appearance.

Gardens, fountains and arcades

The garden sits at the centre, enclosed by a continuous ring of buildings and covered arcades. Paths run between trees, lawns and four fountains. An equestrian statue of Louis XIII stands in the garden. Take a circuit through the square to see how the repeated façades and arcades frame these central features from different angles.

The vaulted galleries contain shops and art galleries, with cafés and restaurants also around the square. They provide a sheltered route around the garden and a chance to look into the businesses occupying the ground floors. For a slower visit, settle on a bench or take a picnic to the grass when the weather is warm.

Maison de Victor Hugo

Victor Hugo’s former home is one of the residences around Place des Vosges and now houses Maison de Victor Hugo. It gives the square another reason to stop beyond its architecture and garden. Set aside time to visit if you want to connect the writer with the historic buildings around him; check the museum’s current visitor information before planning an interior visit.

A pause in Le Marais

Place des Vosges lies in Le Marais, between the 3rd and 4th arrondissements. It works well as a resting point during a walk through the district: circle the garden, explore the galleries under the arcades, then continue into the surrounding streets. The garden can feel especially calm in the morning, while autumn brings warm colours to the trees. In good summer weather, the lawns make a setting for a picnic.
