Montmartre is a hilltop district in Paris’s 18th arrondissement, known for its artistic past, steep lanes and views across the city. Start near the Sacré-Cœur, then wander beyond the busiest square to find quieter stairways, cafés and streets such as rue des Abbesses and rue des Trois Frères. Place du Tertre is a lively stop for watching artists at work, while the backstreets reward a slower, unplanned walk. Come for the landmarks, but leave time to explore at your own pace.

A hill with an artists’ past

Montmartre occupies a hill in northern Paris and was once a village outside the city. Its artistic reputation grew in the late 19th century, when painters including Picasso, Van Gogh, Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec lived or worked in the area. The district’s cabarets and cafés also drew artists and writers.

The old rural landscape has largely given way to closely packed streets, but traces of it remain. Two windmills and a small vineyard survive on the hill. The Moulin de la Galette takes its name from the brown bread, or galette, made by its owners. By the 19th century it had become an entertainment venue, with food, music and dancing.

Follow the streets beyond the main square

Place du Tertre is a central stop, with artists displaying their work and offering portraits. It draws a large share of the district’s visitors, so the surrounding lanes can be a calmer way to experience Montmartre. Walk without a fixed route, taking in the stairways and narrow streets as they climb and turn across the hillside.

Rue des Abbesses is known for its cafés and independent shops. Rue des Trois Frères and rue des Martyrs are also good streets for a café stop. For a longer walk, rue des Saules passes the Montmartre vineyard; Avenue Junot is noted for its houses. The area is hilly, so allow time for the climbs and stairs.
