Le Vaisseau is an interactive science and technology museum for children in Strasbourg, at 1 Bis Rue Philippe Dollinger. More than 130 hands-on displays invite children to explore topics such as robotics, the human body, plants and animals, building, maths and the environment through play. Information is available in French, English and German. There is room to move between activities, sensory experiences for babies and a garden outside, making this a useful indoor stop for families on a rainy day.

A science centre built around play

Le Vaisseau
Le Vaisseau

Le Vaisseau is a centre for scientific, technical and industrial culture, designed to engage children and young people aged 3 to 15. It opened in 2005 in a large concrete building near the Bassin Dusuzeau, southeast of central Strasbourg. Its name means “the ship”, a reference to a child’s journey through science and technology.

The museum uses hands-on activities to introduce scientific ideas. Rather than following a history-of-science exhibition, children learn by experimenting, playing and moving through different activities. The approach gives young visitors room to explore at their own pace.

The displays cover a range of subjects, including the human body, plants and animals, construction, mathematics and logic. Other activities touch on robotics, the environment and disability. Children can try mini-games and experiments, with explanations that help connect play to scientific ideas.

Information is presented in French, English and German, including explanations for exhibits and 3D films. This makes the activities accessible to families who do not speak French. The centre is aimed mainly at children aged 3 to 15, though sensory experiences can also interest babies. Older children can find activities too, but the hands-on format is especially suited to younger visitors.

Planning time for your visit

Families can spend several hours moving between the play areas, experiments and displays. Around three hours is a useful amount of time to set aside, particularly if children want to try a wide range of activities. The museum is indoors, so it can also give families a break from outdoor sightseeing or a rainy day in Strasbourg.

There is a garden outside, as well as a family picnic area. Food options at the café are limited, and vending machines provide drinks. Plan around meals before arriving, especially if your children have specific dietary needs. Le Vaisseau has on-site parking, including a free parking lot. Tickets can be booked in advance through the museum’s ticket website.
