The Royal Exchange

The Royal Exchange is a historic shopping and dining destination opposite the Bank of England in London’s financial district.

The Royal Exchange is a historic shopping and dining destination opposite the Bank of England in London’s financial district. Its grand portico and columned interior give you a chance to see the building’s architecture while browsing luxury boutiques, including Aspinal of London, Hermès and Bremont. Fortnum & Mason serves afternoon tea in the Exchange, and there are restaurants and bars for a longer stop. Come to shop for a special purchase, or simply step inside to see the imposing Victorian building.

A trading centre rebuilt

The Royal Exchange began as a centre where merchants could meet and trade. Founded in the 16th century by Sir Thomas Gresham, it was designed for commercial use and modelled on the Bourse in Antwerp. Queen Elizabeth I officially opened the Exchange in 1571.

Fire destroyed the original building, and a later replacement also burned down. The present Royal Exchange is the third building on the site. Designed by architect Sir William Tite, it opened in 1844. The Exchange’s history is tied to the City’s financial district, with the Bank of England directly opposite.

The portico and central interior

The building’s classical façade is marked by a large portico and Corinthian columns. Inside, boutiques and places to eat sit beneath high arches in a grand, columned space. The contrast between the historic architecture and the shops makes it possible to explore the building even if you are not planning to buy anything.

The Royal Exchange is also associated with civic announcements: royal proclamations were traditionally read from its steps. Its location at a busy junction near Bank makes it a recognisable feature of the City.

Shopping and afternoon tea

The Exchange is now home to luxury retailers, including Aspinal of London, Bremont, Hermès, Fortnum & Mason, Omega and Montblanc. Other names found here include Jo Malone London, Tiffany & Co. and SageBrown. The selection is geared towards high-end shopping, so treat it as a place to browse or find a special purchase rather than hunt for bargains.

Fortnum & Mason brings its tea and food range into the historic building, with an afternoon tea served in velvet seating and leather booths. If you like a stronger cup, the Afternoon blend is one option. Restaurants and bars elsewhere in the Exchange provide places to pause between shops.
