At the Thames Path by Deptford Creek, this unusual bronze sculpture commemorates Peter the Great’s stay in Deptford, where he studied English shipbuilding. Sculpted by Mikael Shemyakin and unveiled in 2000, it marks 300 years since Peter’s Great Embassy to England. Look closely at the figure’s intricate details, then take a seat on the throne beside it for a view of the Thames. The monument is an easy stop if you are already walking between Deptford and Greenwich, but it is not a reason to make a long detour on its own.

Peter the Great in Deptford

Peter the Great came to England as part of a European diplomatic mission and stayed in Deptford, where he studied shipbuilding. The area was home to a Royal Naval Dockyard. His lodging was Sayes Court, the house of diarist and gardener John Evelyn.

Peter’s stay left a difficult mark on the property. His entourage caused damage to the house and garden during their time there. The statue recalls this less formal side of his visit as well as his interest in building a Russian navy.

A sculpture by the Thames

Russian artist Mikael Shemyakin made the bronze monument, unveiled in 2000 to mark the 300th anniversary of Peter’s Great Embassy to England. Its composition includes intricate, symbolic details, and its unconventional proportions give the group a distinctive appearance.

The statue stands by the Thames and Deptford Creek, in front of the Millenium Quay development. A throne beside the sculpture gives you a place to sit and look across the river. The monument is wheelchair accessible at the entrance.
