Petřín is a large, wooded hill above Prague’s Malá Strana, with walking paths, orchards, gardens and viewpoints over the city and the Vltava. Take the uphill paths to the Petřín Lookout Tower, a smaller counterpart to Paris’s Eiffel Tower, or ride the funicular from Újezd. Around the hilltop you can also visit the rose garden and Mirror Maze. In spring, apple and plum trees blossom along the paths. The hill’s steep sections make it a better fit for a walk in comfortable shoes than a quick, flat stroll.

Walking the hill

Petřín

Petřín rises above Malá Strana and connects a network of parks and gardens. Its paths pass through wooded areas and orchards, with viewpoints opening onto Prague’s rooftops, the Vltava and the castle district. You can make the climb on foot or take the funicular from Újezd. The uphill route is steep in places, so allow time for pauses if you plan to walk.

The tower and hilltop sights

The Petřín Lookout Tower was built in 1891 as a smaller version of the Eiffel Tower. Its elevated position gives views across Prague; you can climb the stairs or use the elevator. A Mirror Maze is another attraction on the hill. The wider area also includes gardens, statues and the Štefánik Observatory, while Strahov Monastery lies nearby.

Gardens and seasonal colour

Petřín’s green spaces include a rose garden and orchards, with Kinský Gardens on the southern slopes. The hill is especially appealing in spring, when apple and plum trees come into blossom. There are quieter paths and places to sit among the trees, as well as open viewpoints for photographs. Pack walking shoes if you want to explore more than the flatter garden areas.

Choosing a route

For an uphill walk, start from the Malá Strana side and follow the paths toward the tower. You can stop at viewpoints on the way, then continue downhill toward the Prague Castle area. If you would rather save your energy, take the funicular from Újezd and explore the hilltop attractions and gardens on foot. The funicular route itself has views over the city; one suggested photo stop is the middle station.
