Convento de Santa Clara

Founded in 1644, the Convento de Santa Clara is one of Havana’s oldest historic buildings.

Founded in 1644, the Convento de Santa Clara is one of Havana’s oldest historic buildings. Nuns from Cartagena established it as a convent, and it later educated girls from poor families before becoming a charitable hospital. Its large complex is known for an inner patio with tropical plants, carved woodwork, murals and hidden architectural details. Restoration work uncovered features including secret windows, entrances and crypts. Access can be uncertain, so check whether visitors can enter before making a special trip; the former convent has also operated as a hotel.

Convento de Santa Clara

Nuns from Cartagena founded the Convento de Santa Clara in 1644. It was the first women’s convent in Havana, and its grounds once covered the area between Cuba, Luz, Habana and Sol streets.

The convent’s work changed over time. It educated girls from poor families and later became a charitable hospital. In 1982, the building was designated a historic site.

Major restoration work at the end of the 20th century brought hidden parts of the old structure to light. These included concealed windows and entrances, wall paintings, carved decoration and crypts. The original ceiling’s woodwork is another detail to look for, along with the inner patio and its tropical plants.

The former convent has been used as a hotel, though access for visitors has not been consistent. Confirm whether you can enter, and whether a guided tour is available, before planning your visit.
