At the foot of Beijing’s Western Hills in Haidian District, Beijing Botanical Garden combines extensive plant collections with historic temples and mountain trails. Its 300 hectares include more than 15,000 plant species, with a greenhouse, peony garden and arboretum among the main stops. In spring, peach and cherry blossoms bring seasonal colour; autumn is another good time for foliage. You can also hire a boat on the lake or walk through Cherry Valley. Set aside several hours, and plan your route before setting out: the grounds are large.

Beijing Botanical Garden lies in the city’s northwestern suburbs, between Fragrant Hills Park and Jade Spring Hill. It is part of the China National Botanical Garden, which also includes a South Garden. The combined area is reported at about 300 hectares, and the gardens bring together plant displays, conservation and research areas, scenic grounds and historic sites.

The garden is extensive enough to fill much of a day. Rather than trying to cover every section on foot, choose a few priorities, such as the greenhouse, the peony garden, the arboretum and the lake. The mountain trails at the end of Cherry Valley add a walking option beyond the cultivated garden areas.

Seasonal flowers and plant collections

The plant collection includes more than 15,000 species, with plants from China and other parts of the world. The greenhouse is one of the principal attractions, alongside themed gardens and the arboretum. The peach garden is especially associated with spring flowering; cherry blossoms and other seasonal displays add to the colour at that time of year.

Autumn offers a different reason to visit, with changing foliage across the grounds. The garden also has collections such as peonies, roses, magnolias and lilacs. Exact flowering dates depend on the season, so use the garden as a broad seasonal outing rather than planning around a guaranteed bloom.

Temples, the lake and walking routes

Historic sites sit among the garden’s plant areas. Wofo Temple, also known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, is a notable stop; the site is also associated with inscriptions and remains of other temples. A transport vehicle can take visitors uphill toward the temple, making it possible to explore on foot on the way back down.

The lake is another focal point. Pedal boats and motor-powered boats are available for rides on the water, with a small bridge along the route. For a quieter outing on foot, follow the trails into Cherry Valley and the surrounding hills. The combination of gardens, lake and historic sites means there is no need to treat the visit as a single loop.

Planning your visit

Weekdays are a practical choice if you prefer fewer crowds, as weekends can be busy. Because the grounds cover a wide area, allow at least half a day if you want to see several sections; a more complete visit can take longer. Decide in advance whether the greenhouse, historic sites, lake or valley trails matter most to you.

The material available gives no confirmed current admission or boat-hire prices. Some temple areas may have a separate fee, so check the current arrangements before you go. If you plan to hike, leave time for the trails rather than trying to fit every garden section into the same visit.
