At the northeastern edge of Montréal’s Old Port, the white Clock Tower commemorates sailors who died in the First World War and marks the harbour entrance. Its Art Deco profile makes a striking riverside landmark, even when the tower is closed. Walk the waterfront paths for views of the St. Lawrence River, passing boats and nearby islands, or relax at the urban beach beside it. In summer, visitors can climb 192 steps to the top for views over the river and city. It’s a good stop on an Old Port walk.

A memorial at the harbour entrance

Clock Tower

The white Clock Tower stands at the edge of Montréal’s Old Port, on Victoria Pier. Completed in 1922, it was built in memory of sailors who died during the First World War. The tower also served as a lighthouse for the port, marking the entrance to the harbour.

Its clock was modelled on London’s Big Ben. From the waterfront, the tower’s pale exterior and tall outline are easy to pick out against the riverfront. The site can be visited as part of a walk through the Old Port, even if the tower itself is closed.

Climbing the tower

When the interior is open, visitors can climb 192 steps to the top. Access is seasonal, so check current availability before making the climb part of your plans. The stairs are narrow, which may not suit anyone uncomfortable in enclosed stairways.

From the top, views take in the St. Lawrence River and the city. The waterfront around the tower also gives open sightlines across the water, so you can enjoy the setting without going inside.

The waterfront around the tower

The nearby boardwalk and paths make the tower a natural pause on an Old Port stroll. Boats move along the river, and the open waterfront provides room to stop for photos or take a quieter break. The urban beach beside the tower is another place to sit by the water in summer.

The wider Old Port extends for more than two kilometres along the St. Lawrence and includes cycling paths and other activities. Walking is a practical way to reach the tower and see it from different angles; paid parking is available nearby.
