The museum’s elevated setting is also a reason to visit in the early evening, when you can take in the sunset.

Art and objects in the collection

Bahia Museum of Art
Bahia Museum of Art

The Bahia Museum of Art brings together fine art from the colonial era with Brazilian crafts and historical objects. The collection includes wood carvings, hand-woven baskets, pottery and ceramics. These objects give the galleries a varied focus, from decorative arts to the materials and skills used in traditional craft.

One of the collection’s distinctive displays is a group of 27 large carved wooden panels by Carybé, the name used by artist Héctor Julio Páride Bernabó. Born in Argentina, he spent much of his life in Salvador. The panels offer a chance to spend time with the work of an artist closely connected to the city.
