Randonnée

Trilha do Morro da Urca

Trilha do Morro da Urca climbs through the woods from Urca to the first peak of Sugarloaf Mountain, with views of Guanabara Bay and the city along the way.

Trilha do Morro da Urca climbs through the woods from Urca to the first peak of Sugarloaf Mountain, with views of Guanabara Bay and the city along the way. The hike is short, but steep sections and large steps call for sturdy shoes and some stamina. At the top, you can enjoy the view without taking the cable car. Arrive around 4pm to spend time at the peak before sunset; if you hike back down after 6pm, you must sign a safety waiver for the dark return.

The climb to the first peak

The trail begins at Av. Pasteur, 520, in Urca, and climbs through the woods to Morro da Urca, the first peak of Sugarloaf Mountain. The route is short, around 750 metres according to one account, but the elevation makes it more demanding than the distance suggests. Hikers report large steps and steep sections, so allow for the effort rather than treating it as a flat walk.

Most of the climb is shaded. Along the way, there is a viewpoint toward the airport; the summit has broader views of Guanabara Bay and the city. The route’s main appeal is the walk and the view from above, not a series of stops or sights along the path.

At the summit and on the return

You can enjoy Morro da Urca on foot without taking the cable car. Shops and places to eat and drink are available at the top. The cable car is another option for continuing to Sugarloaf’s higher peak or returning by transport, but those trips require a separate ticket.

For a sunset visit, aim to reach the top around 4pm and leave time to enjoy the changing light. If you choose to walk back down after 6pm, a safety waiver is required because the trail is dark. Take care on the descent: the steps can become slippery after heavy rain, and handrails are scarce in places.
